Another Tourist Dies At The Great Barrier Reef
For the fourth time in a month, a tourist has died at the Great Barrier Reef. The body of a 75-year old Japanese was pulled from the water on Tuesday at Moore Reef, which is about 45 kilometers from Cairns.
Queensland police said the woman was snorkeling with a tour group. Rescuers attempted to administer CPR, but she could not be revived.
A month ago, two French tourists in their seventies were found unconscious in the water near Michaelmas Cay. A few days after that, a 60-year-old British man was scuba diving at Agincourt Reef in the same general region off far northern Queensland. The woman is the 10th person to die on the reef in the region this year.
The Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators says the majority of the victims were elderly and had pre-existing medical conditions. Spokesman Col McKenzie told the ABC, "While we are very proud of the fact we have the safest snorkeling in the world, we've got to sit down and have a really close look at all these events and see if there's anything we can do."
