Executive - Former Billabong CEO Gets Prison
A judge in Brisbane sentenced former Billabong CEO Matthew Perrin to eight years in prison for defrauding AU$13 Million from Commonwealth Bank.
Mr. Perrin was convicted of forging his then-wife's signature on bank documents in 2008 to obtain a mortgage on the family home, which was in his wife Nicole Bricknell's name. He claimed he had her permission. Perrin apparently needed the money after blowing through the $60 Million he made off of taking Billabong Surfwear public in 2000, losing big on an investment in a Chinese supermarket franchise.
"You turned to these criminal activities to stay afloat, you gambled on the ability to trade out," said Judge Julie Dick, who pointed out that $9 Million has yet to be recovered. "You still have no self-realization and remorse. You seem to simply refuse to recognize that it was you who forged the documents and you who caused them to be presented to the bank," she added.
Perrin is 44-years old, and will be eligible for parole in 2020. In the meantime, his attorney says an appeal has already been filed.
