Finance, Executive - Upscale US Retailer Drops Ivanka Trump
The US retailer Nordstrom has dropped the clothing line of Ivanka Trump, daughter of Donald Trump, and the organizers of a boycott is claiming victory.
"I am absolutely thrilled, and I know the vast majority of Grab Your Wallet participants will be as well," said Shannon Coulter, a co-founder of the Grab Your Wallet campaign, which asks consumers to boycott retailers that carry Ivanka Trump or Donald Trump goods.
Only four items from the Ivanka line were left on the Nordstrom website. And although it's not 100 percent certain that the boycott worked, Nordstrom cancelled its affiliation with the line because of poor sales. Last year before the Christmas buying season, the retailer tried to explain its view that carrying a clothing line didn't necessarily add up to a political endorsement. Either way, Trump's racist, misogynist politics has made name-branded products a toxic mess for any responsible business saddled with the burden.
"This is a sharply divisive subject," said company Co-President Pete Nordstrom. "No matter what we do, we are going to end up disappointing some of our customers. Every single brand we offer is evaluated on their results - if people don't buy it, we won't sell it."
