Finance - US Seeks Details On 1MDB Deals
US Department of Justice investogators are asking three more big banks for details on their dealings with the troubled 1Malaysia Development Bhd., known as 1MDB. The fund lost about a billion dollars right about the time a similar amount appeared in the personal account of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
JPMorgan Chase, Deutsche Bank AG, and Wells Fargo are not targets of the investigation and haven't been accused by authorities of wrongdoing. But sources close to the investigation say they facilitated transfers to and from 1MDB. They join other big institutions who've come forward to say they're working with the US probe into 1MDB. Goldman Sachs underwrote US$6.5 Billion in bond deals for 1MDB. Swiss private bank BSI SA also says it is cooperating.
Luxembourg and Switzerland are also trying to find the trails the money took out of 1MDB, and if they indeed lead to well-connected Malaysian officials. On Thursday, Singapore's Monetary Authority announced it is in close contact with other financial centers as it conducts a "thorough review of various transactions" related to 1MDB through the its banking system.
PM Razak and 1MDB deny any wrongdoing.
