Health - NZ Measles Outbreak Worsens
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is warning the un-vaccinated to stay away from Auckland after health officials reported more than 800 cases of Measles in the country's biggest city.
Nationwide, New Zealand reports 963 confirmed infections. Many of the patients are young Pacific Islanders from South Auckland, leading to concerns of spreading the disease to other island in the Pacific.
Measles is a highly infectuous disease that could have severe complications if not taken seriously, and the fatality rate is one in 1,000 cases.
"We have had children sick enough to go to intensive care, some have had to be ventilated,” pediatrician and Pacific health expert Dr. Teuila Percival told the SBS, "These kids are almost dying."
Last week, UN health officials lamented how anti-vaxxers are playing a terrible role in the spread of Measles in outbreaks around the world, based on the belief of long-since debunked junk science. The situation is so bad, that an Auckland paramedic is getting a lot of attention for his social media post taking these people on directly. Ambulance Officer Brendan Peat uploaded a photo on Facebook of himself holding up a sign that reads, "Please vaccinate."
Peat says, "Time for a plug as the outbreak slowly turns towards an epidemic, another one tonight," adding, "Please trust science, and vaccinate not only kids but adults too against such an easy preventable disease which is proven safe and effective."
