ICT - Samsung Producing 10-Nanometer Chips
South Korean tech giant Sasung is moving ahead after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. The company announced it has commenced the mass production of System-on-Chip (SoC) products with 10 Nanometer FinFET technology. This makes Samsung the first company in the industry to do so.
"The industry's first mass production of 10 Nanometer FinFET technology demonstrates our leadership in advanced process technology," read the statement from Samsung Executive Vice President Jong Shik Yoon. "We will continue our efforts to innovate scaling technologies and provide differentiated total solutions to our customers," he added.
The company says that it will begin launching products with the 10 Nanometer chips early in 2017, and more products would be added throughout next year. It didn't specify the products that would be introduced. But earlier this month, the South Korean trade journal Electronic Times reported that Samsung will be the sole contract manufacturer of Qualcomm Inc's high-end Snapdragon 830 chips using 10-nanometre production technology and these processors will be used in half of Samsung's next Galaxy S smartphones expected to launch in early 2017.
Samsung claims the new 10 Nanometer FinFET technology will meet benchmarks of a 30 percent increase in area efficiency with a 27 percent higher performance, or 40-percent lower power consumption when compared to the 14 Nanometer doohickeys it will replace.
