Despite the suspicions of the head of Australian Christian Lobby (ACL), the van crash into the socially conservative lobbying group's Canberra office was neither politically nor religiously motivated.

"As a result of our conversations with the male driver of the vehicle, we have established that the actions of this individual are not politically, religiously or ideologically motivated," said ACT Police Commander Mark Walters.  The 35-year old driver of the formerly white Toyota van had ignited gas bottles causing damage to the building and the office.  He suffered severe burns, but was able to walk four kilometers to a nearby hospital.

No one else was hurt in the early morning attack.  ACL managing director Lyle Shelton had earlier claimed the blast was an attack on "freedom of speech"; the group has outspoken views on Women's Reproductive Rights and Same-Sex Marriage.  After police cleared politics as a motivation, Shelton said the fire came in the "context of multiple death threats and threats of violence" he claims were made against the group.
