More than a hundred people have been murdered in Brazil's Espirito Santo state, as chaos and looting spread during the police strike. The military mobilized airborne troops and armored vehicles on Thursday to reinforce the roughly 1,200 soldiers and federal police trying to restore order. Schools and businesses are closed and transportation is severely disrupted during the emergency. Retailers report losing almost AU$38 Million in sales; those stores that do open find themselves swamped with panicked citizens trying to stock up on whatever they can.

United Nations officials fear that Myanmar's military may have killed "thousands" of Rohingya Muslims in an ethnic cleansing campaign in the country's northwest. "The talk until now has been of hundreds of deaths," said one of two UN refugee officials who spoke to the Reuters news agency on condition of anonymity, adding: "This is probably an underestimation - we could be looking at thousands." A UN report released last week detail accusations of cruelty on the part of Myanmar's military. Myanmar officially considers the Rohingya to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, even though most of lived in Myanmar for several generations.
Egyptian police raided and shuttered a prominent rights group that documents human rights abuses and treats police torture victims. The Nadeem Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violence and Torture was "sealed with wax today as per the order issued in February 2016 which we have challenged in court" according to its lawyer. The Nadeem Center is registered with the government as a medical clinic; in November, officials froze its bank accounts because it wasn't registered as an NGO (non-governmental organization).
Israeli police arrested a Palestinian man from the West Bank for opening fire on a marketplace and wounding four people. How much orange clown news do we need today?
White House advisor Kellyanne "alternative facts" Conway has been "counseled" after very, very clearly violating conflict-of-interest rules and plugging Ivanka Trump's failing clothing line during a live interview on Murdoch's Fox "News" Channel. A day earlier, Donald Trump had attacked Nordstrom department stores for dropping his daughter's line of clothing and accessories. US law says that public employees may not use their positions "for the endorsement of any product, service or enterprise, or for the private gain of friends, relatives, or persons with whom the employee is affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity." Oh BTW, Nordstrom shares are up after the kerfuffle.
Tangerine Hitler disputed bipartisan accounts of his own Supreme Court nominee criticizing his attack on the judiciary as "disheartening and demoralizing". Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal reported that Judge Neil Gorsuch said those exact words when asked about Trump's attack on the Federal Judge in Seattle who issued a ruling against the Muslim Travel Ban. In the White House, Trump claimed that Gorsuch was describing Sen. Blumenthal - a complete mis-characterization. Republican Senators Kelly Ayotte have since denied Trump's alternative facts and backed Sen. Blumenthal's account.
It turns out that the Cheeto-faced Sh*t Gibbon didn't just alienate PM Malcolm Turnbull and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto: He also said extraordinarily STUPID things to French President Francois Hollande. Trump declared that the United States "wants its money back" from NATO and complained that China was taking advantage of Americans (what France is supposed to do about that is a mystery). That same day, the idiot threatened to send US troops in Mexico, and hung up on PM Malcolm Turnbull. Oh, but he had a wonderful conversation with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin (you know, the guy who gave the missile to the Ukrainian separatists to shoot down MH-17, killing 37 Aussies and Oz residents).
