Good Morning Australia!! - Japan is out to impress Australia with its high tech submarine - She raised a daughter for 20 years, but it turns out she kidnapped the girl as a baby - Violence and flagrant racism flare at another rally for the fascist Donald Trump - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:
Japan will send a Soryu-class submarine to Australia next month to try and convince the government to award the contract to replace the aging Collins-class subs to the land of the rising sun. For Tokyo, it's more than just a sale: "This is about the strategic relationship between Australia and Japan and Japan's role in Asia and the rise of China and so they're pulling out all stops to win this contract," said Dr. Malcolm Davis from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in an interview with the ABC. It's also about how Australia will respond to increased aggressiveness from China, especially in occupying several islands in the South China Sea that were already claimed by the Philippines and Vietnam, in waters where billions of dollars of Aussie trade flows every year.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited US President Barack Obama at the White House - it's the first time in nearly two decades that a Canadian leader has paid an official visit. It's also a notable thaw in relations in between the two close neighbors which had gone a little frosty during the term of Trudeau's conservative predecessor Stephen Harper. The two countries also announced a joint statement on environmental cooperation aiming at cutting methane emissions by 40 - 45 percent below 2012 levels, by 2025.
Police charged an elderly supporter of US fascist demagogue Donald Trump with assault after he sucker punched a black protester at one of Trump's disgusting rallies. 78-year old inadequate white male John McGraw was caught on video from about a million different angles as he went at the younger, healthier protester at a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Rakeem Jones shook it off and kept walking, but sheriff's deputies handcuffed the victim of the attack, which sparked their superiors into starting an internal affairs investigation into their conduct. Although minor, it's the latest in a string of violent incidents perpetrated by Trump's ignorant rabble: Recently, a staffer attacked a female reporter and tried to push her to the ground; a secret service agent assigned to protect Trump grabbed a news photographer by the throat (still waiting for his ass to be fired); a known racist pushed a black woman protesting at a rally. These are only the recent ones, it's been going on for months.
The leader of an infamous Chilean death squad who killed at least 75 political prisoners are dead at age 94. General Sergio Arellano Stark was the commander of the infamous "Caravan of Death". After fascist-scum dictator Augusto Pinochet seized power from the Democratically-elected government with the help and approval of the US in 1973, Stark led helicopters that traveled the country picking up political opponents of the regime. Stark died in a nursing home, and not in a prison cell.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is condemning Balkan nations for shutting their borders to migrants and refugees, stranding thousands of them in Greece. Merkel says the situation is "neither sustainable nor lasting" in dealing with the largest refugee crisis in Europe since the end of World War II, and puts Greece in a "very difficult situation". Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia, plus non-EU members Serbia and Macedonia acted on their own to close borders; Merkel says it should have been an EU-wide decision. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras warns the EU has "no future" if decisions impacting the entire continent continue to be decided in this manner.
A South African court convicted a woman of kidnapping a baby from hospital twenty years ago and raising the child as her own. The girl's birth name is Zephany Joy Nurse but she was raised under another name, which is not being revealed to protect her identity. Nor is the name of the defendant being released, for the same reason. The Nurse family never gave up hope of being reunited with the girl. The two families lived within a couple of kilometers of each other in a Cape Town suburb, and only met because Zephany became friends with another girl she learned was actually her younger biological sister. Sentencing for the kidnapping mom is next month.
