Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej is dead at age 88, after 70 years as head of state, and having been in poor health for the last few.  Many mainstream media sources say he was a "stabilizing force" in a country rocked by several military and monarchist coups, he managed to always choose the side that would preserve the monarchy.  After a public mourning period, he will be replaced on the throne by Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who:  Was educated at Australia's Duntroom military college; made his poodle an Air Marshall in the Thai Air Force; and apparently has a cruel streak demonstrated in part by stripping his own children of their names and titles, forcing them to live in exile.  It is believed the Prince doesn't enjoy the same level of respect many Thais had for the late King.

Boko Haram has released released 21 of the Chibok School Girls kidnapped from their boarding school in northern Nigeria in 2014.  This comes after negotiations with the Nigerian government moderated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Swiss government.  It's not clear what Boko Haram gets in the agreement, but President Muhammadu Buhari insists it is not a prisoner swap.  A team of doctors and psychologists will provide assistance to the young women once they arrive in the capital Abuja.  Prior to this, 50 or so girls managed to escape during the kidnapping two years ago, and only one other girl had been rescued earlier this year, meaning that around 190 are still being held by the terrorists.

South African president Jacob Zuma will attempt to block a report detailing corruption and influence peddling by him and his supporters.  Zuma's spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga told western reporters, "I can confirm that the president has applied for a court interdict,"against the report compiled by South African Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, who is in a race against time as she leaves office on Saturday.  Ms. Madonsela's office previously exposed Zuma's improper and illegal use of public funds to bling out his private compound with a pool and an amphitheater, which he eventually had to pay for.

The Maldives is leaving the Commonwealth, following intense criticism over human rights violations and money laundering allegations.  The Commonwealth ministerial action group (CMAG) had been closely monitoring the deteriorating situation in the Indian Ocean nation following the 2012 ouster of democratically-elected President Mohamed Nasheed.  Just last month, government forces raided a newspaper reporting allegations against the coup president.  It was expected that the Commonwealth would suspend the Maldives, and today's move preempts that.

The US denies stepping up its activities in the Yemen Civil War, after a destroyer targeted Houthi rebel radar sites in retaliation for a rebel missile attack on the American naval ship.  The missile attack failed miserably, and the Americans responded with Tomahawk missiles, which tend not to fail:  "These limited self-defence strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships, and our freedom of navigation in this important maritime passageway," Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said.  The Houthi are Shiite Muslims backed by Iran, fighting against a Sunni government supporting by Saudi Arabia.

Israel is angry with the United Nations world heritage agency UNESCO after a rather obvious and childish snub.  Known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount, UNESCO passed a resolution to refer to the holy site in Jerusalem by the Muslim name Al Haram al Sharif.  UNESCO did this, even though the site is important to all three faiths claiming to follow the God of Abraham.  UNESCO said Muslims' freedom of worship was being curtailed by "escalating aggressions and illegal measures" by ultra-right Jewish nationalists. Labour party leader Isaac Herzog accuses UNESCO of betraying its mission:  "Whoever wants to rewrite history, to distort fact, and to completely invent the fantasy that the Western Wall and Temple Mount have no connection to the Jewish people, is telling a terrible lie that only serves to increase hatred."

The presidential campaign of orange cretin Donald Trump is denying that fascist demagogue apologized to Serbia for the US bombing in the former Yugoslavia during the 1990s.  You'll recall that the Bill Clinton administration got involved in the break-up of the former Balkan SSR to stop the Serbs from committing atrocities against civilians, such as the infamous Srebrenica Massacre in which 8,000 men and boys were slaughtered.  If true, it would put Trump in line with the Russian view, which supported the Serbs.  Ginger Hitler was first quoted by Serbian weekly magazine Nedeljnikas, and the report was then picked up by Newsweek.  Now the campaign says, "This was a hoax and we look forward to receiving a formal retraction and apology from all involved."  But was it?  It does fit his world view...

US First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a rousing speech condemning the stunted frat boy sexism displayed by cinnamon fascist Donald Trump at a campaign appearance on behalf of Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton in Manchester, New Hampshire.  "This is not normal.  This is not politics as usual," Mrs. Obama said without mentioning Trump by name.  "This is disgraceful, it is intolerable, and it doesn't matter what party you belong to," she added, calling out Republicans too cowardly to stand up against their presidential standard bearer.  "No woman deserves to be treated this way - none of us deserves this kind of abuse."  Last weekend, video emerged showing Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women, and four women came forward yesterday accusing him of that very behavior.

The 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature goes to... Bob Dylan?  Did he write a book?  A lot of actual authors are not happy about it.  The Nobel Committee chose Dylan for his ground breaking song lyrics and poems in the 1960s.  Many are happy with the decision, others oppose it because Dylan isn't actually an author; others think those folks are just jealous; some think that a female author or one from the developing world would have been more deserving, instead of the f***ing baby boomers patting themselves on the back again with another white, male recipient; and others think Dylan shouldn't even accept an award named after the inventor of TNT and too often granted to war mongers.

This white guy who isn't Kevin Rudd is the new UN Secretary General.
