The 19-year old twerp who murdered 17 people at a Florida High School yesterday was a member of a white supremacy group that trained itself in combat techniques.  Nikolas Cruz had social media accounts in which he wore masks, flashed knives and weapons, spouted Islamophobia, and wore a "Make America Great Again" hat.

Cruz was adopted as an infant; his adoptive father died six years ago and his adoptive mother died last year.  On Wednesday in Parkland, Florida, Cruz took one of his weapons - a AR-15 assault rifle - from the home where he lived "with friends" and attacked the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, killing 17 people.  He was able to legally purchase the weapon despite a background of trouble and mental illness, which included the aforementioned social media accounts on which he proclaimed that he wanted to be a "professional school shooter".  Practically everyone at the school knew he was trouble - not allowed to bring bags or rucksacks to campus for fear he was hiding weapons before he was eventually expelled - and he had been reported to the FBI for his threatening behavior before the shooting.  So, let's emphasize that again"  The FBI had been warned about Nikolas Cruz.

Having fallen through every crack in society, Nikolas Cruz finally found a group to welcome him.  The self-proclaimed "Republic of Florida", a white supremacist group, says Cruz was a member who "participated in one or more ROF (armed) training exercises in the Tallahassee area".  Three former classmates said they know of Cruz's history of racist extremism and had seen him march with the group.  Despite this, a leader of the group told reporters that he didn't tell Cruz to commit mass murder at the high school, and believed Cruz was angered after being rejected by a girl.

As expected, the reaction from the current occupant of the White House was lacking, at best.  After remaining mostly silent on the day of America's latest school massacre, the orange clown Donald Trump tweeted his "prayers and condolences", adding "No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school".  A teen identified as 'Sarah' who is a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tweeted back:  "I don't want your condolences you f__king price of sh_t, my friends and teachers were shot.  Multiple of my fellow classmates are dead.  Do something instead of sending prayers.  Prayers won't fix this.  But Gun control will prevent it from happening again."

Later, Trump appeared on TV to read a teleprompter: "It is not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference," he said, "We must actually make that difference."  At no point did he mention the word "gun".  Instead he offered, "We are committed to working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the difficult issue of mental health."  Trump said this just short of one year after he rescinded an Obama-era directive that would have made it more difficult for people with mental illness to purchase guns.

Anyway..

South Africa's presidential succession wasn't very democratic.  Technically, African National Congress (ANC) party leader Cyril Ramaphosa was elected by parliament and sworn in, a day after Jacob Zuma resigned while chin-deep in corruption allegations.  But Mr. Ramaphosa was the only person nominated for the job because the opposition - both Left and right - refused to take part in the process, believing that parliament should have been dissolved and fresh elections called.  The Nelson Mandela Foundation said, "There is a need to reckon with the failures of the democratic era."

An El Salvador woman is free from prison after serving eleven years for having an abortion - which she denies.  Authorities released Teodora del Carmen Vasquez after the Supreme Court ruled there wasn't enough evidence scientific evidence to determine that she had intentionally caused the stillbirth.  Even so, the court refused to vacate her conviction.  El Salvador is one of a handful of countries to bans all abortion in all circumstances, even if the woman is raped, her health or life is at risk, or if the fetus is nonviable.

The French aid group Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF) says it acted on more than 160 complaints about its staffers last year, including 24 cases of sexual harassment.  This, as charities move to shine some sunlight on their practices after Oxfam admitted some of its workers hired prostitutes while performing aid missions to Haiti.  MSF, best known for its work offering medical aid in conflict zones, says it fired 19 staffers in those cases.
