Indonesia has issued a "Red Warning" to airlines flying in and out of Bali because of the dangerous cloud of volcanic ash coming from Mount Agung. Jetstar and Qantas have already cancelled flights and now Air Asia has followed suit. That caused problems for thousands of travelers on Sunday, and it is likely to be just as frustrating and chaotic today. Indonesia officials and volcanologists are warning that hot, molten magna has been detected close to the surface, but they haven't extended the 7.5 kilometers evacuation zone around Mount Agung.
The deadly explosion in Ningbo, China that killed two people and injured 20 has been traced to a hole in the ground where a toilet had been, according to state media. The blast knocked down buildings and left the area littered with debris, although the closed factory and residential buildings around it had already been slated for demolition.
At least 23 people including several children have been killed in Syrian government attacks on Ghouta, a rebel-held enclave on the outskirts of Damascus. Syria, Russia, and Iran claimed the city of 400,000 is part of a "de-escalation zone" meant to reduce the violence in the civil war - but in fact, forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been starving the city. The United Nations say most of the people have been reduced to eating garbage and animal fodder because Assad won't let aid through.
Argentina's government is insisting the missing submarine ARA San Juan was seaworthy in the days before it disappeared on 15 November with 44 crew members on board. "Two days before setting sail, there was a check of the whole operating system," said navy spokesman Enrique Balbi, "The submarine doesn't sail if that's not done." Some families of the missing crew have alleged the vessel was not in good shape. But the US Navy and the international nuclear test ban monitoring agency detected what appeared to be an undersea explosion in the area where the sub was operating, just after the captain reported an electrical problem.
Zimbabwe's former ruler Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace Mugabe are apparently getting "golden handshake" fee of US$10 Million, plus his yearly $150,000 salary for the rest of the 93-year old's life. After he dies, 52-year old Grace will get a pension of half the presidential salary for the rest of her life. Medical care, housing in their mansions, and domestic service are all included in the deal. In other words, the Mugabes will retain all of the wealth and privileges of their former dictatorship while ordinary Zimbabweans are left with a worthless currency, no healthcare, gutted roads and infrastructure, bad schools, and an average life expectancy of about 60-years.
The floor of a disco collapsed in Tenerife, the largest of Spain's Canary Islands and a major tourist resort. Reports say 20 to 40-people were injured as they spilled into the building's basement.
