Good Morning Australia!! - Hundreds of passengers manage to survive a plane crash with a giant fireball - While Trump goes loopy on them, GOP leaders fret over how to salvage 2016 - China tests its amazing bus that soars over traffic jams - And more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:
A Emirates Airlines Boeing 777 crash-landed at Dubai International Airport and caught fire - amazingly, all 300 passengers and crew on board survived it and escaped to safety. One firefighter died in the effort to contain the fire. Video taken by travelers with their mobiles at the airport showed the plane out of the southern Indian state of Kerala appeared to make a hard landing on its belly. Passenger Maryam Sharji said, "As we were landing there was smoke coming out in the cabin." She added, "People were screaming and we had a very hard landing. We left by going down the emergency slides and as we were leaving on the runway, we could see the whole plane catch fire."
Speaking of crashing and burning, the campaign of fascist demagogue and US Republican Party candidate is apparently coming off the rails. Consider these headlines from the past 24 hours: Campaign workers are "suicidal" over Trump's missteps - including a twitter war with the Gold star family of a fallen military hero - and the campaign chief is "mailing it in". NBC reports that top republican officials are going to meet with Trump to stage an "intervention" over his bizarre behavior. The US network ABC News reports the republicans are secretly looking for another candidate to take over the ticket. Former republican congressman and current TV host "Morning" Joe Scarborough claims sources told him that Trump asked about using nuclear weapons three times during a foreign policy briefing.
Speaking of interventions, Europe's most-senior Human Rights official has gone to Turkey to tell President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other officials to respect the rule of law and judicial integrity. And they're expected to tell Council of Europe Secretary-General Thornbjorn Jagland that Turkey isn't getting enough support from its European allies. Erdogan's crackdown following last month's failed "coup" has seen 50,000 detained or sacked over suspected links with the alleged mastermind - who denies any involvement. The speed at which Erdogan acted led most observers to believe he already had an "enemies list" prepared.
Speaking of the breakdown of the rule of law, Philippine police shot and killed six supporters of a Mayor on Leyte who President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened with son along with his alleged drug-dealer son. Extrajudicial killings have gone off the charts since Duterte took office a few weeks ago, with cops given license to bump off anyone accused of having any involvement with the drug trade. The official body count is more than 400, but rights groups insist it is a lot more. More than a hundred thousand people turned themselves in as addicts or dealers, hoping to escape summary execution - only to be thrown in obscenely overcrowded prisons where inmates are literaly packed like sardines in yards, halls, and staircases.
Islamic State announced a new leader of the Nigeria-base terrorist group Boko Haram - without mentioning the fate of former leader Abubakar Shekau who was seen on early propaganda videos bombastically taunting Nigerian and Western officials, usually after committing atrocities such as the mass kidnapping of the Chibok school girls in April 2014. But Shekau has not been seen in a year, and regional powers have pushed Boko Haram back from the territory it once held. The new guy, Abu Mus'ab al-Barnawi, has appeared in videos as well. He was much more soft-spoken than Shekau as he threatened to kill everyone and blow up everything.
US Feds arrested and charged a transit police officer from the nation's capital, accusing 36-year old Nicholas Young of attempting to provide material support for Islamic State. The FBI says Young has been on their radar for years, and they set up a sting last year in which Young allegedly purchased those credit card gift cards to send to IS in lieu of cash.
Nicaraguan President Danny Ortega has chosen his wife as his vice presidential running mate as he goes for a third term. Critics are blasting the decision, saying it's scandalous and highly unlikely that he couldn't find a qualified running mate in all of his Sandanista movement. The opposition accuses him of trying to consolidate power with his family, and others express disappointment that Ortega's commitment to get more women involved in government meant "his wife". Ortega and Yoko.. I MEAN Rosario Murillo, who currently serves as the government’s communications chief, wed in 1979 at the dawn of the first Sandanista era when the Leftists overthrew the Reagan-backed Somoza regime. Ms. Murillo is a published poet, and frequently appears on TV explaining her mix of Leftist politics, Roman Catholicism, and New Age spirituality.
China has rolled out its new elevated bus, which cruises up above traffic jams while cars can drive or sit gridlocked underneath. The first test run is taking place in Qinhuangdao in Hebei province. It rolls on tracks on either side of two lanes of traffic, which provides for quite a bit of space on the passenger platform above. Quite an advance, considering the thing was introduced only a couple of months ago.
