Hello Australia!! - Saudi jets attack a hospital - UN troops are accusing of ignoring calls for help as armed troops raped and pillaged a peacekeeping compound - Trump said something stupid again - And more in your CareerSpot Global News Briefs:
Warplanes bombed a Medecins Sans Frontieres hospital in Yemen, killing at least 15 people and wounding many more. This is at least the fourth time the medical charity MSF has been hit by air strikes in the 17-month old civil war in Yemen, in which Saudi Arabia unleashed its air force to try and return its ally to power after Shiite Muslim Houthi rebels routed the government. MSF and the UN are condemning the attack, and Amnesty International said it was "a serious violation of international humanitarian law which would amount to a war crime".
United Nations peacekeepers allegedly refused to respond to calls for help as South Sudan troops ran amok on the Terrain Hotel complex in Juba, raping and robbing foreigners, beating people and carrying out mock executions - eventually killing a local journalist. The Associated Press says this happened on 11 July, after troops loyal to President Silva Kiir successfully fought off rebel forces. The South Sudan military is denying responsibility, claiming that anyone can get weapons and uniforms and impersonate troops in the troubled young country. The UN recently passed a US resolution to send more peacekeeping troops to protect civilians.
The sentence is 10 years in prison for the South African woman who kidnapped a baby from hospital and raised her as her own for 17 years. The girl only learned of her true identity after she began attending High School and came into contact with another student with whom she bore a remarkable resemblance - it turned out to be her biological older sister. "You cannot go out and steal a child and expect that the society will accept that, or the courts will accept that, or the general public will accept that," said the prosecutor. Fair enough, but the girl has shunned contact with her biological family and has stayed with the family she's known all of her life.
Egypt's Olympic Committee told Judoka Islam El-Shehaby to go home, after last Friday's refusal to shake the hand of the Israeli wrestler who had just beaten him. The International Olympic Committee also dressed down Mr. El-Shehaby for the snub, which was "against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values." The 34-year old ultraconservative Salafi had come under pressure from hardline Islamists on social media and from television pundits not to participate in the match.
The Mayor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin has declared a curfew after a second night of unrest, which followed the police killing of a black man. "After 10:00 o'clock your teenagers better be home or in a place where they're off the streets," Mayor Tom Barrett said. Authorities have been taking great pains to show the 23-year old Sylville Smith was an armed threat to the black police officer who shot him - but after years of other unjustified shootings of others, the angriest people aren't listening anymore. Several cars and stores have been burned, cops have been pelted with rocks and other objects, more than a dozen people have been arrested.
In a perfectly Orwellian policy announcement, fascist demagogue Donald Trump said that if he was elected president, potential immigrants from Muslim countries would be singled out to be thoroughly screened to determine if they shared "Western Values" such as.. you guessed it.. religious tolerance. In other "Trump's campaign is a raging outhouse fire" news: Trump ally Rudy Giuliani said America never had a terrorist attack until Barack Obama became president, ignoring the Oklahoma City Bombing and the 9/11 Attacks that occurred while Giuliani was New York mayor; newly released documents showed that Trump's campaign chief is a pawn of pro-Russian interests; Trump's daughter posted vacation pics with her newest BFF Wendi Deng Murdoch, who it turns out is Vladimir Putin's girlfriend. Yes, THAT Wendi Deng Murdoch.
A Shanghai woman reportedly fell off of a cruise ship and survived 38-hours in the ocean before being rescued by a fishing boat. The 31-year old, identified only by the surname "Fan", said she leaned too far over the railing and fell from the Royal Caribbean cruise traveling from Shanghai to South Korea and Japan. She said she drifted, managed to tread water, and somehow slept - without a life jacket. Fan's only injuries appear to be from jellyfish stings.
