Fairfax media says state and federal ministers, as well as attorneys-general have been discussing this since last year. The idea will be that Aussies can hand in guns to authorities with out fear of prosecution. Authorities hope to decide the timing of the event before the end of the year.

German authorities arrested three Syrian refugees on suspicion of being members of Islamic State. "It could be that this was a sleeper cell," said Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere who noted that the suspects' travel documents were issued by the same authority as ones found on some of the men who carried out the Paris terrorist attacks last November. The suspects are two teenage boys aged 17 and 18-years, and a 26-year old man.
France is set to open its first official Anti-Radicalization Center to deter young people from the road to jihadism. New York City police are looking for a man who they say tried to set a Muslim woman on fire. The suspect walked up to the woman in traditional Islamic dress over the weekend and held a flame from a pocket lighter to her clothing. It only burned a one inch hole, but the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says it fits a pattern of increased violence and attempted violence on Muslims that has grown alongside fascist demagogue Donald Trump's campaign for the White House.
Fresh violence in a Trump campaign rally: A bloated, cowardly, middle-aged blowhard who knows damned well that peaceful protesters aren't going to get into brawls threw some punches and slaps at a man who demonstrated against Trump at a rally in North Carolina. This happened as Trump attempted to attack his Democratic Party rival Hillary Clinton for her statement that half of his supporters belong in "a basket of deplorables" because of their demonstrated racism and violence.
BTW: After Hillary said that, the Merriam-Webster online dictionary reports a 50,000-percent increase in searches for the word "deplorable". So, that's the stupid part of America for you.
US President Barack Obama made his first solo campaign appearance for Hillary Clinton, who is sidelined with pneumonia. Before an enthusiastic (and non-violent) crowd in Philadelphia, the President condemned the violence and bigotry exhibited by Trump's camp: "What we've seen from the other side in this election, this isn't Abraham Lincoln's Republican party. This isn't even the vision of freedom that Ronald Reagan talked about," accusing Trump of selling "a dark, pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other, we turn away from the rest of the world". He also chided the US corporate media for holding Trump to a lower standard than Hillary Clinton: "You don’t grade the presidency on a curve."
Israel is denying Syrian claims of shooting down an Israeli warplane and a drone. The official Damascus news agency Sana said surface to air missiles downed the two aircraft in the southern province of Quneitra; Israeli military spokesman Arye Shalicar said, "At no point was the safety of (Israeli) aircraft compromised. Nothing true about what they claim."
Former Israeli President Shimon Peres is in hospital in a serious condition after suffering a stroke. Aides initially believed the 93-year old suffered a mild stroke but doctors at Tel Hashomer Hospital near Tel Aviv realized he suffered a massive brain hemorrhage and put him into an induced coma. Peres' career spanned 70 years, serving in several cabinets, twice as Labor party Prime Minister, and seven years as president. He shares the Nobel Peace Prize for the 1993 peace deal with the Palestinians that his successors failed to turn into a lasting treaty.
