As Iraqi troops, Shiite militias, and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters encircle and close in on the Islamic State-held city of Mosul, Europe is being warned to prepare for a sudden influx of jihadists fleeing the advance.  Acknowledging that it's unlikely for all or most of the 5,000 IS fighters in Mosul to suddenly pick up and head to Europe, European Union Security Commissioner Julian King said even a small number of militants would pose "a serious threat that we must prepare ourselves for".  Most of the terrorist attacks in Europe over the past couple of years have links to the wars in Iraq and Syria, with terrorists having traveled to the theater to receive IS training.

The advance on Mosul is slowing as forces are slowed down by explosives and booby traps they encountered along the way.  The commanders said the operation was going as planned, despite resistance from IS fighters who were hitting back with suicide car bomb attacks.  But even though the advancing 30,000 good guys vastly outnumber the few thousands IS fighters in Mosul, commanders warn that the operation could take weeks or months.

A Russian Naval group has set sail for the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of its ally Syria.  The aircraft Admiral Kuznetsov was seen being escorted by seven other Russian ships as it passed Trondheim in Norway.  It will circle around to the west of Europe and join the Russian combat mission in Syria.  This is  Russia's largest naval deployment since 2014.

UN World Heritage agency UNESCO officials are apologizing to Israel after their executive board approved a resolution to refer to a key holy site in Jerusalem only by its Islamic name.  It's known to Jews as the Temple Mount and al-Haram al-Sharif to Muslims; the divisive resolution recognizes only the latter and criticizes Israel's activities in the Old City, which is important to all three religions claiming to follow the God of Abraham.  UNESCO executive board chairman Michael Worbs told Israeli TV, "It's very exceptional what happened yesterday, and I'm sorry for that."  The issue caused Israel to suspend its cooperation with UNESCO.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday said, "To say that Israel has no connection to the Temple Mount and the Western Wall is like saying that China has no connection to the Great Wall of China or that Egypt has no connection to the pyramids."

US President Barack Obama has no patience for Donald Trump's unfounded claims that the US Presidential election is somehow "rigged" against him:  "You start whining before the game's even over?" an incredulous Mr. Obama said at the White House.  Trump and his surrogates have increasingly claimed the US election system is "rigged": in the media, which is increasingly scrutinizing the orange clown; and at the polling places, which aren't even set up and all of the election gear is still stuffed in storage closets.  All of the evidence shows that Trump is wrong.  "I have never seen in my lifetime or in modern political history any presidential candidate trying to discredit the elections and the election process before votes have even taken place. It's unprecedented," said Mr. Obama.

The US President spoke at an event with the visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who voiced his own opinion when it comes to at US Republican Party presidential candidate and fascist demagogue Donald Trump.  "The name of the future has to be education not intolerance, sustainability not distraction, trust not hate, bridges not walls," said Mr. Renzi, "The name of the future has to be growth not austerity.  In the time of fear, we have to give answer with the audacity of hope, not only in the United States."  Let's unpack that comment:  First, it's the latest from a foreign leader to suggest that US prestige will instantly plummet if Trump gets in the White House;  Second, it comes from a man who is rebuilding his nation's economy and international standing after years of being held back by the wayward leadership of its own blowhard right-winger, former prime minister Sylvio Berlusconi, who was convicted of tax fraud in 2013 and 2015.

Mexican police are investigating the murder of a judge whose court handled cases linked to drug cartels.  Federal Judge Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias was exercising outside near Mexico City when he was shot in the head at point-blank range; Mr. Bermudez succumbed to his wound while being taken to a hospital.  The motive is unclear.

The International Olympic Committee says it will work with Japan to lower the costs of hosting the 2020 Summer games, after Japan found costs exploding to four times initial estimates.  Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike ordered a review that found expenses topping US$29 billion.  "That's certainly a figure that seems very large to us," IOC Vice President John Coates told reporters after the meeting in the Japanese capital.  Amongst the things they're considering is moving events like rowing out of Tokyo to cities hundreds of kilometers away with suitable existing facilities - which would be a walk back from the initial agreement to keep everything within an eight kilometer circle.
