US Doctors are claiming to have helped conceive a "three parent baby"; there have been three-parent babies in the past, but this is the first to use a new technique known as mitochondrial donation or pronuclear transfer. The baby has DNA from its Jordanian Mum and Dad, and a bit from a female donor that replaces a genetic flaw in the mother's called Leigh's Syndrome that killed the couple's first two attempts at parenthood. The American medical team did this procedure in Mexico because it is not legal in the United States, but more births could be coming soon in the UK where the technique was recently approved.
In its first ruling to make cultural destruction a war crime, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague sentenced a former Islamist militant to nine years in prison for his role in destroying ancient shrines in Timbuktu, Mali in 2012. Judges noted that Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi admitted his crime and had shown remorse for leading terrorists in tearing up the mausoleums and teaching centers at the Sidi Yahia mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that extremists believed were evil, graven images. The trial also marks the first time a jihadist was tried before the ICC.
The leader of Colombia's FARC, now transitioning from a militia to a political forces, apologized to the Colombian people for the five decade civil war. "I would like to ask for forgiveness for all the pain that we may have caused during this war," said Rodrigo "Timochenko" Londono, before an emotional and cheering crowd at the official signing ceremony ending the conflict. President Juan Manuel Santos - who took an enormous political and social gamble in ending the conflict - wiped a tear and told the gathered Colombians and Latin American leaders, "Swapping bullets for votes and weapons for ideas is the bravest and most intelligent decision that any rebel group could take," and, "Welcome to democracy."
The UN World Health Organization wants "safe corridors" out of Aleppo to evacuate the sick, injured, and dying from the beseiged city. The organization says there are only 35 doctors left in the city to deal with the rapidly increasing number of injured people from the rebel-held eastern part of Aleppo, which Russian and the Syrian government are bombing into dust. "It's not just one attack - it's a daily attack on civilians. So you can imagine how many wounded are trying to get some medical help in such circumstances," said WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib. "It's a worrisome situation." The Syrian American Medical Association says the city is on the verge of collapse.
US Presidential debate loser and fascist demagogue Donald Trump says he "may" hit Hillary Clinton even harder with moronic personal attacks in the next face off in a week. After a poor performance marked by sniffling and rambling incoherently in a manner that made many people believe he was zonked on cocaine, Trump blamed a faulty microphone for his televised failure before more than 80 million US TV viewers - although, the microphone seemed to be working well enough to pick up every sniffle and the 50 to 70 times he interrupted the former Secretary of State to show that he had nothing to say. But simultaneously, he claimed to have "won" the debate based on unscientific online polls on right-wing websites in which anyone can vote multiple times. DERP!!
