The European Union reached a rather unusual deal with Turkey to ease the migration crisis, but the United Nations says it could contravene international law.  Under the plan, all migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey would be returned - and for each Syrian sent back, a Syrian in Turkey would be resettled in the EU.  "An agreement that would be tantamount to a blanket return of any foreigners to a third country is not consistent with European law," said Vincent Cochetel, the UN's regional coordinator for the refugee crisis in Europe.

Amnesty International went further, saying the EU-Turkey plan is "wrought with moral and legal" potholes, and completely contrary to the refugees' right to seek asylum.  "EU and Turkish leaders have sunk to a new low, effectively horse-trading away the rights and dignity of some of the world's most vulnerable people," said Amnesty's Iverna McGowan.  Turkey effectively swapped holding back the migrants for giving its citizens easier access to Europe and accelerated discussions to join the EU.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto is on record comparing US Republican party presidential candidate Donald Trump to the worst racist, fascist scum of the past.  Referring to Trump's xenophobic and racist campaign rhetoric, President Pena Nieto said:  "That's how Mussolini got in, that's how Hitler got in," referring to the Italian fascist and German nazi leaders of the 20th Century, "they took advantage of a situation, a problem perhaps, which humanity was going through at the time, after an economic crisis."  Two of his predecessors have been even more vocal in condemning Trump, who infamously referred to Mexicans as "criminals" and "rapists".

An Egyptian student has agreed to leave the United States, after posting on his social media page that the world would thank him if he killed Donald Trump.  23-year old Emadeldin Elsayed was not charged with a crime, but US officials were moving to deport him, thus the compromise.  Mr. Elsayed is being held in a jail in California, which his lawyer says is illegal:  "He's being detained, I think, primarily because he's a Muslim and he's a Middle Easterner," said attorney Hani Bushra, "This kid is going to become a poster boy for hating America."

An Australian woman has pleaded guilty to sedition charges in Singapore, for fabricating news stories that prosecutors say negatively portrayed foreigners to "promote feelings of ill-will and hostility" between different races and between Singaporeans and guest workers.  Ai Takagi ran the now-defunct "The Real Singapore" from Australia, but she was arrested on a visit to the city-state last year.  For writing false stories about Filipinos fighting with Hindus and Chinese people peeing in bottles on the Metro, the former University of Queensland student pocketed almost AU$500,000.  Ms. Takagi's Singaporean husband is claiming his right to trial and reportedly will plead not guilty.

Iran has conducted several ballistic missile tests across the country, defying US pressure.  The Iranian Revolutionary Guard referred to it as "deterrent power".  The US says if the reports are confirmed, the matter will be brought before the UN Security Council.

Tennis star Maria Sharapova lost three major sponsors after admitting she failed a drug test prior to the Australian Open, during which she was beaten by Serena Williams anyway.  Porsche, Nike, and Tag Heuer all suspended or ended their relationships with her.  Ms. Sharapova says she didn't know that an obscure pharmaceutical drug she had taken for a decade had been banned by tennis officials as of 1 January.  Ms. Williams, BTW, congratulated Sharapova for her honesty in coming forward.
