Two British teens volunteered to teach in a developing nation but were subjected to an acid attack – Indonesia protects Buddhist sites from feared post-Ramadan violence – And did Kenya’s freighters fill their pockets while they battled the massive fire at the country’s main airport?

Two British teens will be flown home from the East African island of Zanzibar after they were targeted in an acid attack.  Police say the suspects were on a moped, sped up to the women, and threw acid at them.  The victims are identified as Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup, both from London.  They were working as volunteer teachers in a Zanzibar school as part a three-week program.  Hospital officials say their injuries were not severe and the caustic liquid might have been diluted.

Indonesia is stepping up security at Buddhist temples among other sites after Ramadan.  The guard at the Borobudur Temple world heritage site has been doubled to 418 police, which seems like a lot, but just a fraction of the 140,000 cops deployed across the country in the past week.  There are fears that tension between Muslims and Buddhists in Myanmar.  There’s already been bombing attempts against Buddhist targets in Jakarta and in India.

Kenya’s firefighters are accused of looting ATMs and electronics stores while fighting the huge fire that devastated the main arrival hall at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International airport.  And officials say police tried to take a safe from one of the currency exchanges.  The airport serves as a regional hub for East Africa, with many long-distance international flights landing there to connect to countries across the region.

There’s a nasty heatwave in Central Europe, with several communities in Austria reporting high temperatures just above 40C.  Hungary issued a heat warning, and some government ministries have relaxed dress codes.  Bosnia and Serbia are fighting (not each other) wildfires made worse by drought and the heat.

The crew of the train that crashed in Northwestern Spain last month did not report any mechanical issues before the derailment.  79 people were killed and 170 more passengers are recovering from various injuries.  The train was going twice as fast as it should have been going when it hit the bend at Santiago de Compostela.  The investigation has pretty much centered on the actions of driver Francisco Jose Garzon Amo.

The high court of Venezuela will not consider the appeal of the losing candidate in April’s Presidential Elections.  Opposition leader Henrique Capriles Radonski tweeted there was a “lack of justice” in Venezuela.  Just about every country on earth recognized the election of President Nicolas Maduro, the hand-picked successor to Hugo Chavez who died earlier in the year.
