Former FIFA boss Sepp Blatter and two other officials from the world football body awarded themselves huge payouts and bonuses worth more than AU$100 Million over five years. FIFA lawyers say these perqs were quietly approved last May only days after the indictments of a host of top FIFA executives on corruption charges. The three were already banned from football for six to twelve years for suspicion of criminal mismanagement of FIFA's money, charges they deny.
Poland will begin recruiting members for a 35,000 strong paramilitary force because of rising tensions with Russia. The civilian volunteers will be trained in military skills to counter the kind of asymmetrical "hybrid" warfare that led rebellious parts of Ukraine to break away and pledge loyalty to Russia. NATO is also planning to bolster Poland's eastern border, and will hold a summit in Warsaw next month to finalize plans.

The River Seine in Paris crested way above expectations at 6.5 meters above flood stage. That's more than twice its normal level and the highest since 1982 - enough for Paris officials to issue wider flooding warnings. "We didn’t expect the level of the water to rise so much today," said Paris Deputy Mayor Colombe Brossel. Mayor Anne Hidalgo's office is planning to keep a crisis center open through Saturday, even though the Seine has flood walls to withstand much higher water levels.
Despite the rainy weather, the major powers met in Paris to look for a solution to the never-ending Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A joint communique read, "A negotiated two-state solution is the only way to achieve an enduring peace, with two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security." Most believe the status quo is not sustainable, and the stall is threatening to scuttle the two-state solution.
The Zika Virus might be transmitted via Oral Sex, according to a letter to The New England Journal of Medicine describing one such case in France. It adds a little weight to concerns that sexual transmission of the virus needs more attention by researchers. Zika is mostly spread by the bite of the Aedes Aegypti (which lives in Queensland, btw), and is associated with birth defects in thousands of cases in Brazil.
