As US and Russian negotiators return to Switzerland for a fresh round of talks to end the Syrian Civil war, rebel forces backed by Turkey are advancing on the town of Dabiq which is held by Islamic State.  The terrorist group places a great value on Dabiq, producing propaganda highlighting a "prophecy" that an apocalyptic battle will take place there.  No statement has been issued from the super power talks in Lausanne.

The so-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed at least 35 people at a Shiite mosque in Baghdad, where people had been taking part in mourning rituals commemorating the killing of the Prophet Mohammed's grandson, Hussein, in the 7th Century.

At least 24 Hindu pilgrims died in a stampede at Varanasi in India's Uttar Pradesh state.  Police say that 3,000 people had been expected to attend the religious festival, but 70,000 showed up.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making payments of roughly AU$3,200 available to families of victims.

North Korea attempted and failed a launch a ballistic missile near the northwestern city of Kusong, according to US intelligence.  The city is close to the Sohae launch site, where suspected pre-launch activity had been detected in recent weeks.  "The missile is presumed to be a Musadan intermediate-range ballistic missile," read the statement from US Strategic Command.  North Korea had exploded another nuclear device earlier this year, and is suspected of trying to develop a missile delivery system.

In American politics, US House Speaker Paul Ryan directly contradicted the paranoid garbage coming from fellow Republican Donald Trump, who is already making excuses in case he loses the Presidential election next month by claiming that the election is "rigged" by supporters of Hillary Clinton and the global elites, and martians and the secret cabal of rich people to which Trump claims to belong.  Ryan released a statement:  "Our democracy relies on confidence in election results, and the speaker is fully confident the states will carry out this election with integrity."  Trump, who represents racists and malcontents, has frequently clashed with Ryan, one of the most powerful mainstream Republicans left.

Also, Trump challenged Hillary Clinton to a drug test.  That's right, the fidgety guy who incessantly sniffs, rants incoherently, and runs out of gas barely thirty minutes into debates and public appearances is challenging Hillary to a drug test.  Clown show.

More than 150 countries have reached a "monumental" deal to phase out Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), greenhouse gases that hasten man-made Global Warming.  "It's a monumental step forward, that addresses the needs of individual nations but it will give us the opportunity to reduce the warming of the planet by an entire half a degree centigrade," said US Secretary of State John Kerry who forged the deal after a series of meetings with other leaders in the capital of Rwanda.  Wealthy economies will start to limit their use of HFCs within a few years and make a cut of at least 10 percent from 2019.  Developing nations - which for some reason includes China - will freeze their use of HFCs from 2024.
