A hot air balloon caught fire while carrying a tour group over Texas, crashing to the ground and killing all 16 people on board.  This happened 60 kilometers south of the capital of Texas Austin, near the town of Lockhart.  Local residents a popping noise, and assumed it was just another Texan shooting a firearm until the flaming gondola crashed into a field.  It appears to be the worst balloon tragedy in the Western Hemisphere.  "There are thousands of balloons that go up every year," said Jeff Chatterton, a spokesman for the Balloon Federation of North America.  "This is unspeakably tragic but it is rather unique."

Turkish forces say they killed some 35 Kurdish militants who tried to attack a military base in the country's restive southeast.  Aerial reconnaissance spotted the alleged infiltrators, and the Turks launched air and ground strikes.  Since the ceasefire between Turkey the the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) broke down a year ago - mostly because President Recep Tayyip Erdogan broke it - hundreds of people have been killed in clashes.

Dozens of families have fled the besieged city of Aleppo, which is encircled by government forces backed up by Russian air power.  They boarded buses that traveled on one of the "safe exit" corridors announced by Russia last week, a move cautiously welcomed by the United Nations.  But around 300,000 people are still trapped in the rebel-held city.

Prosecutors in Belgium charged a man with attempting to commit "terrorist murder", apparently preempting a terrorist attack.  Cops picked up the 33-year-old man named in court papers as "Nourredine H" during a raid near Liege; his brother "Hamza H" was also briefly detained by eventually released.  No weapons or explosives were found in the searches.

America's biggest scumbag and fascist demagogue Donald Trump slandered the parents of United States Army Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2004 as he moved troops under his command to safety, taking the blast in their stead.  His parents Khizr and Ghazala Khan appeared at last week's Democratic National Convention, with father Khizr waving his personal copy of the US Constitution while noting that his hero son would never have been allowed in the United States under Trump's despicable plan to stop Muslim immigration, and pointing out the Trump has never made any sacrifice for his country.  On Saturday, Trump appeared in interviews suggesting that Captain Khan's mother was forbidden to speak because the family is Muslim, and (no hyperbole, this is happening) claiming that he "sacrificed" by being involved in construction projects.

The UN Security Council approved French measure to send a police force to Burundi, where unrest has claimed hundreds of lives in recent months.  The trouble started when President Pierre Nkurunziza ran for a third term in office, which opponents said was unconstitutional.  "Given an increase in violence and tension the Security Council must have eyes and ears on the ground to predict and ensure that the worst does not occur in Burundi," said French UN Ambassador Francois Delattre.

Police in Paraguay are investigating how a jailed drug lord would up with a luxurious three-room prison cell with a kitchen and library, a treadmill for exorcising, and a plasma TV for watching DVD docos about fellow drug lord Pablo Escobar.  Upon discovering this, cops transferred Brazilian drug lord Jarvis Chimenes Pavao to another prison and returned the cells to their prior austerity.
