An Australian SAS soldier is dead of a gunshot wound in an administration building in Afghanistan.  Officials say despite the nature of the soldier’s death and the facts being somewhat unclear, this incident appears to be non-combat related.

“On behalf of the Australian Defense Force, I offer my condolences to the family, the friends and the colleagues of this brave soldier,” said ADF Chief Marshal Mark Binskin.  “He was a highly qualified, experienced and well-respected Special Forces soldier.  His death will impact the nation and we will do all we can to support his family.”

The soldier was found with a gunshot wound, and evacuated to hospital in the capital Kabul.  Doctors tried to save him, but the injuries were too severe and he died.

Investigators locked down the facility and collected evidence to determine what happened.  A “psychological support team” is also being sent to Kabul to assist those who knew him or had contact with the incident.

At the request of his family, the soldier’s name is not being released.  He’s believed to have been a member of t he Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment.

Although Australia’s role in combat operations ended last year, Oz still has around 400 troops there acting as advisors.
