A cargo train slammed into a row of vehicles at a crossing in Giza south of Egypt’s capital Cairo, killing more than 20 people and leaving at least 28 more injured.
Most of the dead and injured were family members on a bus returning from a wedding in Cairo. The head of Egypt’s railway authority said the driver of the train was caught by surprise when the minibus and a pickup truck moved into the crossing.
Roads and railways in Egypt have a poor safety record. The incident could spark protests by an Egyptian public that is sick of successive governments failing to enforce even basic safeguards. The neglect has led to a string of deadly crashes, one of the worst happening last year when 50 people, mostly children, were killed after a train crashed into a school bus south of Cairo.
