An air and sea search has been called off for an elderly cruise ship passengers who apparently went overboard.  A security camera showed the man had dropped into the ocean about 280 kilometers east of Sydney, the Sun Princess’ destination.

The search by the cruise ship and a Dornier search and rescue aircraft ended without finding any trace of the passenger.  The Sun Princess was supposed to have returned to Sydney on Tuesday morning.  That’s now put off until Wednesday as the search continues, according to Carnival Australia.

But the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it had received details of the 84-year old man’s condition indicating that he was unlikely to have survived the 25-meter fall.  Heavy swells of two to three meters and winds blowing at 46 kilometers per hour in the area would make for rough going even for someone in peak physical condition.
