Argentine President Cristina Kitchner is calling British residents of the Falkland Islands “squatters”, and is dismissing the results of a referendum in which the residents chose to remain a British Overseas territory.

Argentina lost a war on this question in 1982, but has not given up its 180-year territorial claim on the islands it calls “Islas Malvinas”.  Britain extended full citizenship to the residents of the islands defeating Argentine forces.

President Kirchner criticized the referendum saying, "it's as if a bunch of squatters were to vote on whether or not to keep occupying a building illegally."

But President Kirchner also said she wanted to "reiterate our commitment to dialogue, our compliance with United Nations resolutions".
