The head of Greece’s Left-wing political party Syriza says the end of “national humiliation” is near. New opinion polls put Syriza ahead with three days to go before national elections. Syriza is promising to oppose austerity foist upon Greece under the terms of the bailout from the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank – AKA “The Troika”.
What little money Greece has is used to pay down its bailout debt, instead of being spent on development, jobs, education, healthcare, pensions, welfare, et cetera. That’s left a sour taste in the mouths of Greek voters.
Syriza is promising to try to renegotiate part of Greece’s debt and end austerity measures. But that could trigger a standoff with the Troika, and push the country close to one of two scenarios: Bankruptcy, or an exit from the Euro Zone.
Metron Analysis will release a poll today showing Syriza’s lead over the conservative ruling New Democracy party growing from 4.6 points to 5.3 points – Syriza gets 36 percent of the vote, compared with 30.7 percent for the conservatives, who’ve lost popularity due to championing unpopular austerity reforms at the behest of the EU/IMF. An earlier poll by the Rass agency shows Syriza lead by 4.8 points. The vote will be held on Sunday.
