Kenya is acknowledging that some of its cops and soldiers sent into the Westgate Mall to rescue civilians and protect law and order instead looted the joint. Two members of the Kenyan Defense Force (KDF) were sacked and jailed; a third is under investigation.
“Discipline is our core driving point and we are not playing with this issue. That is why we have taken action on these soldiers,” said General Julius Waweru Karangi at a news briefing.
Kenyans were outraged by CCTV video clips showing soldiers with bags filled with goodies filing past the bloodstained floors were some of the 67 civilians killed in the Westgate Mall Siege lost their lives. General Karangi had previously said that the troops were merely getting some bottled water to quench their thirst while battling to free the hostages from the al-Shabab terrorists.
But shop owners complained of missing items even before the CCTV footage was broadcast around the world. The two jailed soldiers were found with cameras and mobile phones from the mall.
