Hundreds of people have been rescued from a sinking Ferry Boat off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. But about a hundred are still missing, and at least two people are dead. Dozens of rescue boats and helicopters scrambled to save as many of the 476 passengers and crew as possible.
The ship left Incheon port, just west of Seoul, on Tuesday evening. But by Wednesday morning, the ship was in dire trouble off the south and crew sent out the distress call. The vessel was heavily tilted onto its side and partially submerged. The ship is so precarious that passengers were told to jump into the sea and await rescue.
Reportedly among those on the boat are 325 South Korean high school students from a suburb of Seoul who were sailing on a class trip to the southern island of Jeju. It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but Yonhap news agency reported that the ship had run aground.
