At least six people are dead and many are missing as torrential rains caused flooding that continues to devastate parts of Poland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.
The River Vltava flows through the Czech capital Prague. It’s rising and expected to peak on Tuesday morning. Seven-thousand people have been evacuated and the historic Charles Bridge is closed. In fact, much of Prague is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the flood threatens to do damage beyond mere real estate.
Tigers at the Prague Zoo had to be tranquilized so they could be moved out of an enclosure thought to be at risk.
In Germany, much of the city of Passau is inaccessible by foot because of the flooding. It’s where the Danube and two other rivers meet, and now where those rivers spill over their banks. Water is at its highest level since 1501 and is likely to go higher.
