The state memorial service for cricketer Phillip Hughes has been cancelled, according to New South Wales Premier Mike Baird. The state government with the Hughes family and Cricket Australia say last week’s enormously successful service in Macksville was a fitting send off.
“All parties felt that given the enormous outpouring of support at last Wednesday's funeral, a state memorial service would no longer need to be held,” Baird said. Thousands of people went to Macksville for the service last week, and many, many more watched and TV and listened on the radio.
On 25 November, a bouncer struck Hughes in the neck, causing an extremely rare type of vascular injury that led to uncontrollable bleeding on Hughes’ brain. He died in hospital two days later.
On Tuesday, there will be a short memorial at the Sydney Cricket Ground prior to the start of the fourth Test between Australia and India. Hughes was named 13th man for the Australian team.
