How many big city mayors on this planet are repeatedly caught smoking crack? Toronto Mayor Rob Ford’s improbable reelection campaign has suffered a setback. A second video purportedly showing Ford smoking crack has surfaced, this time in his sister’s basement. And it was recorded last weekend. This time around, Ford is taking a leave of absence to go to rehab.
The clip – viewed by two reporters from the Toronto-based Globe and Mail newspaper – shows Ford taking a drag from a long copper-colored pipe, exhaling a cloud of smoke, followed by his right arm convulsing. The substance in the pipe hasn’t been confirmed, but for crying out loud it’s Rob Ford we’re talking about. There are three clips in all, being shopped around by a drug dealer.
The footage comes as Ford embarked on a reelection campaign based on the importance of second chances and forgiveness. He’s asking these things of voters because this is the second time a drug dealer has crawled out of the woodwork to peddle a video of Ford smoking crack.
Last year, Ford spent months denying he was a crack user after reports of the first video made the rounds. He was eventually revealed to be a liar, but refused to resign. The city council stripped him of most of his authority in November 2013.
Oddly, Today’s video isn’t even the only recording Ford has to worry about. Another newspaper – the Toronto Sun – obtained audio of Ford at a bar earlier this week. On it, the tequila guzzling mayor is heard complaining about a Gay Pride flag at city hall, whining about his wife Renata, threatening the bartender and making lewd comments about a female opponent in the mayor’s race.
“He was really wasted,” said a witness. “And he was acting like a real ass.”
