At least eleven workers have been killed in the collapse of a building under construction in Chennai, India, in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Rescuers managed get to 28 people to safety, but there are still many trapped under the rubble. It’s the second building collapse in India in the past few days.
The 12-storey residential building came down under heavy rain in Chennai. 132 rescuers with cutters and shovels are working feverishly to find survivors. Police have already launched an investigation, and at least two construction company officials have been arrested.
Authorities also arrested a subject in the collapse of a rickety, 50-year old building in Delhi. 45-year old Mohammed Javed allegedly ordered construction work on an adjacent plot without getting permission from local officials. It’s believed that vibrations from the construction project led to the older, weaker building coming apart. Ten people, aged five- to 38-years-old, died in the Delhi collapse.
