United Nations investigators will go to Syria “as soon as possible” to investigate three sites where chemical weapons were allegedly used, now that the Syrian government has agreed to let them in.

More than 25 people were killed in the northern town of Khan al-Assal, outside Aleppo, earlier this year.  The government and the rebels blame each other for the attack.

The US, UK, and France all say forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons at Khan al-Assal abd other sites.  Russia conducted its own investigation and claims the rebels were to blame, using sarin gas loaded into a small projectile.

The UN did not identify the other two sites to be investigated, but they are believed to be near Homs and Damascus.

The UN investigation team will attempt to establish if chemical weapons were used, but will not determine who was actually responsible for the attacks.
