A very odd thing happened at the summit of NATO foreign ministers in Antalya, Turkey. They locked arms at the end of meeting and sang, possibly after a few cocktails. And the choice of song was incredibly strange, given that NATO is a military alliance.
Video of the incredibly talentless, white, and European bunch of bureaucrats and military officers singing “We Are The World” has gone viral, racing around the world a couple of times. The tone deafness isn’t limited to the fact that none of them can sing very well.
The song was written in the 1980s for the “USA For Africa” project, inspired by Bob Geldoff’s “BandAid”, intended to raise money to urgent relief of famine in Africa. In the original version, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson and other 1980s pop stars are pretty specific in their purpose.
NATO doesn’t appear to be planning to feed anyone – although certainly the alliance has engaged in humanitarian missions over the years. But most of the conference dealt with the countering the threat of “hybrid warfare” posed by Russia.
“We are adapting our alliance to a new environment, and implementing the greatest reinforcement of our collective defense since the end of the Cold War,” explained NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg – who would later sing with the others.
And NATO certainly isn’t “the World”, as it represents less than 15 percent of the global population.
