Oregon Governor Kate Brown says the gunman who killed 13 people at a rural college campus in the town of Roseburg was a 20 year old male; minutes earlier, police confirmed that the shooter is dead after meeting officers responding to the violence. At least 20 people are wounded. Roseburg is a tiny logging community on the main West Coast Interstate highway and doesn't have the resources for a major medical center to handle the trauma cases, so victims are being taking by ambulance and helicopter to other cities.
Witnesses at Umpqua Community College told reporters that the shooting started in an English class and from there went into science classes. 18-year old Kortney Moore saw her teacher shot in the head, adding that the shooter demanded that people stand up and state their religion before unloading on the class. 25-year old Navy veteran glimpsed the gunman, describing him as a white male. Police later said they recovered three handguns and one long rifle, an assault rifle like an AR-15.
Thursday, 1 October 2015 was the 274th day of the year; America already had 293 mass shootings of more than four fatalies prior to the violence in Roseburg, Oregon. Addressing a mass shooting for 15th time in his presidency, Barack Obama said, "We are the only country on earth that sees these kind of mass shootings every few months," criticized the scumbag National Rifle Association for opposing gun control, and called on lawmakers to pass gun control legislation.
Russian MiGs conducted a second day of airstrikes in Syria, hitting camps of CIA-trained rebels opposed to Syrian President and Kremlin ally Bashar Al-Assad - putting Washington and Moscow on different sides of the multi-front Syrian civil war, which has already killed at least 250,000 people. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said his forces were not only targeting groups linked to Islamic State, but also singled out Al Nusra Front - and what he described as "other terrorist groups". Lavrov said, "If it acts like a terrorist, if it walks like a terrorist, if it fights like a terrorist, it's a terrorist, right?" Oh yeah, hundreds of Iranian troops are arriving in Syrian government-controlled territory to mount a major ground offensive.
Iran says 464 of its citizens were killed in the stampede at the tail end of the Hajj pilgrimage on the outskirts of Mecca - double the previous estimates. Iran and other nations accuse Saudi Arabia of downplaying the true death toll, which the Saudis put at 769 but other sources say more than 1,000 people died when two large groups of pilgrims converged on one very narrow street.
An Israeli couple has been shot dead while driving between two Jewish settlements in the West Bank, and the four young children in the vehicle were injured. It comes after two similar attempted shootings at Israeli-tagged vehicles in the area, and amid rising frustration among Palestinians over Israel's perceived failure to live up to agreements, and failure to prosecute suspects in the deadly arson attack on a Palestinian family blamed on Israeli nationalists earlier this year.
Burkina Faso's military has taken coup d'etat leader General Gilbert Diendere into custody. Officials also froze his assets, and the assets of 13 other coup figures. The interim government planning democratic elections is disbanding the 1,200 member Presidential Guard that Diendere commanded.
