Opposition leader Bill Shorten is expected to introduce a bill that would effectively legalize same-sex marriage in Australia by replacing the words “man and woman” with “two people”.  It would also recognize same-sex marriages performed in other countries, while not forcing Australian ministers to perform same-sex nuptials.  The government is likely to cut short debate, despite momentum building in the developed world for recognizing simply fairness and equality.

Australia is signing on with the US and other nations to put pressure on Beijing to end China’s island-building in the South China Sea.  Defense Minister Kevin Andrews told a regional security conference in Singapore that Australia was pressing “all parties to exercise restraint, halt all reclamation activities, refrain from provocative actions and take steps to ease tensions”.  China went far beyond its internationally recognized borders to dump landfill on some coral reefs and put runways and weapons on them.

The six world powers trying to get Tehran to give up its nuclear program have reportedly agreed on a way to restore United Nations economic sanctions, if at some point Iran breaks the terms of the deal.  Reuters news agency is reporting that other hurdles remain, but the accord among the six powers – The US, UK, France, Germany, Russia, and China – brings them closer to a possible deal with Iran. “We pretty much have a solid agreement between the six on the snapback mechanism, Russians and Chinese included,” said a Western official quoted by Reuters with the caveat, “But now the Iranians need to agree.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry will be flown back to Boston after breaking his leg in a bicycling accident in the French Alps.  The 71-year old is an in a stable condition in Hospital in Geneva.  It could be a major problem for Kerry, because he’s no longer a spring chicken, and these sorts of injuries heal more slowly in a man his age – especially one who’s already had hip replacement surgery.  It’s forced Kerry to cancel some engagements this week, and occurred as the deadline on the Iranian nuclear negotiations draws near.

The son of US Vice President Joe Biden has died of brain cancer at the age of 46.  Beau Biden served in the US military in Iraq, and had intended to run for governor in the state of Delaware.

Here’s some crazy video – a giant kite weighing 700 kilograms crashed into the crowd at the annual Higashiomi Kite Festival in Shiga, Japan.  Four people were injured, and one as yet to regain consciousness.

Nepal has reopened schools, a month after the killer earthquakes.

South Korea’s health minister apologized for an outbreak of MERS that’s grown to 15 patients. “We are making our utmost efforts to prevent the further spread of the disease,” said Minister Moon Hyung-Pyo of MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, which can cause symptoms ranging from flu-like aches and pains to pneumonia and kidney failure.  The disease came into South Korea last month via a patient returning from business in Saudi Arabia.  But the health ministry is under criticism for allowing another infected patient to fly to China, potentially infecting dozens of his colleagues and people who sat near him on the airplane.

It was another weekend of rescues and tragedies south of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea.  The Italian Coast Guard rescued 5,000 immigrants from Africa and the Middle East, but brought at least 17 corpses ashore Sicily.  Boats from Italy, Britain, Malta, and Belgium took part in the rescues, assisted by planes from Iceland and Finland, and coordinated by EU’s border control agency Frontex.
