Officials in far western Indonesia say they have less than two weeks worth of food and medicine with which to care for 1,350 immigrants rescued from crap boats the sea in recent days.  Around half of the migrants fled from Myanmar and Bangladesh.  The conditions on the immigrant boats are horrific – some of those rescued from sinking ships say that about 100 people died in a fight over the last of their food.  Others were stabbed, hanged, or thrown overboard.  And thousands more are believed to be adrift, denied permission to land in Indonesia, Malaysia, or Thailand.

The Iraqi city of Ramadi has fallen to Islamic State.  Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi had ordered troops to stand their ground and wait for Shiite militia reinforcements, but Iraqi forces abandoned their positions.  IS put out a statement claiming it had taken the 8th Brigade army base, along with tanks and missile launchers left behind by troops.

Egypt executed six members of a Sinai militant group that had sworn allegiance to Islamic State.  They were convicted of an attack last year that killed two military officers.  Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch claim three of the men weren’t even at the scene of last year’s attack – they were in police custody at the time.

In Stupid America, two rival bikie gangs had a shoot out in and outside a sports bar in Waco, Texas.  Nine people were killed; several are recovering from serious injuries.  This happened in a busy shopping center where families were sitting down to lunch at neighboring restaurants, and it was avoidable.  Cops blame the Twin Peaks Sports Bar for inviting trouble.  “The management wanted them here,” said Sgt. Pat Swanton of the Waco Police who added, “Management knew that there were issues, and we were here, but they continued to let those groups of people into their business.”

Video has emerged of a violent clash between Chinese police and villagers who want a new railway to cut through their town.  They’re upset because the rail line is skipping their community and being diverted to the hometown of the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, while their area still has no train, no airport, and no waterway. 

Tens of thousands protested in the Macedonian capital of Skopje, demanding that Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski resign because of corruption allegations.  The opposition released recordings that purport to show Gruevski’s ministers plotting to cover-up a murder and rig elections.  Despite last weekend’s gun battles between Macedonian police and Albanian Kosovar separatists, Sunday’s rally against Gruevski had Kosovars and Macedonians marching side by side, carrying their respective flags.

Another giant anti-government protest, this time in Guatemala.  Another group of tens of thousands want President Otto Perez Molina to step down over a bribery scandal in the customs office.

Pope Francis canonized four nuns on Sunday, including two from what was then Ottoman-ruled Palestine.  Both Sister Marie-Alphonsine Danil Ghattas and Sister Maryam Baouardy founded convents in the troubled land.
