Saudi Arabia says it is breaking off diplomatic ties with Iran.  This comes amid the row over the Saudi beheading of a prominent Shiite cleric of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr - who preached non-violent resistance to the Saudi royal regime - over terrorism charges he and his followers denied.  The Saudi move comes after protesters in Tehran stormed the Saudi embassy yesterday and set fires in the compound.  Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir gave Iranian diplomats and their families 24 hours to get out.  Earlier, Iran's Ayatollah promised "diivine retribution" for Saudi Arabia's actions.  It's a mess.

Israel finally charged two settlers in the arson attack that killed three members of a Palestinian family including a baby boy.  21-year-old Amiram Ben-Uliel reportedly already admitted to firebombing the Dawabshe family home in the West Bank on 31 July, and spray painting threatening graffiti on the outside.  18-month-old Ali Dawabshe died in his crib; parents Reham and Sa’ad Dawabshe died in hospital.  Their surviving son Ahmed is still in serious condition in hospital, such were his burns.  A minor known as "A.A." in court documents is charged as an accessory.  The crime brought condemnation from around the world.

A band of heavily armed domestic terrorists clainming to number 150 took over the main office of a Federal nature preserve in a remote corner of Oregon in the US Pacific Northwest.  They're protesting a court ruling that will send two ranchers back to prison for arson convictions.  The ranchers are not supporting the smelly, stupid, white male insurrectionist loons at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.  Americans who still have a few brain cells left are outraged over the corporate media's relative silence, as well as the almost total lack of police or military response, pointing out that peaceful protesters in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland were met with militarized responses that provoked days of violence.

A European Union official is threatening legal action against Poland's new conservative government over its controversial media law, which extends government influence over Poland's public broadcasters.  The directors of four public broadcasters resigned in protest of the flagrant power-grab over the weekend.  With critics saying Poland's conservative government is threatening free speech, EU Commissioner for the Digital Economy Guenther Oettinger says the EU might be forced to "put Warsaw under monitoring".

Spain's political uncertainty just gained another level, as a small anti-capitalist party in Catalonia denied its support to the coalition of pro-independence "Junts pel Si" leader Artur Mas.  It pretty much ensures that Catalonia will have to have another snap election in March.  The CUP (Popular Unity Candidacy) demanded that Catalonia have a Socialist economy with power devolved to local assemblies.  Meanwhile, negotiations to form a national government drag on after the ruling Popular Party failed to win a clear majority on 20 December.

A Scottish man has been arrested in Kyrgyzstan, after comparing its national dish to a horse's penis.  Michael McFeat from Abernethy is employed by a gold mine in the horribly repressive country.  His coworkers complained to police after he posted a photo to social media showing them queuing for a "chuchuk" horsemeat sausage - which he compared to a stallion's dong.  As incredibly stupid as this sounds, Mr. McFeat is in real trouble - he faces up to five years in prison.  The UK Foreign Office says it is contacting the Kyrgyzstan government.
