There are growing calls for the major European powers to step up and help ease the immigration crisis in the Mediterranean Sea, where at least 1,100 people have drowned in the last two weeks, more than 1,750 for the year.  Leaders will meet in Luxembourg later today – and yet thousands of migrants continue to pour in.  Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi says his country is “at war” with human traffickers on the lawless coast of Libya, and his defense minister says the EU should consider military action.  A Greek minister is also demanding that the “great powers” of Northern Europe take more responsibility, as most of it falls on the shoulders of the southern countries.

French police say they thwarted an “unprecedented” plot to attack a church, although the incompetence of the suspect might have played a role.  A man called for an ambulance after accidentally shooting himself.  In the investigation, cops realized the suspect had been in contact with someone in Syria, and they seized documents with references to al Qaeda and Islamic State, as well as several weapons including a Kalashnikov.  Eventually, they tied the gunman to the murder of a woman found a day earlier.

German customs officials announced they found about 700 weapons in a man’s house, as well as 2.2 tons of ammunition.  They didn’t identify the 54-year-old man from the town of Schwerte, but did say he didn’t have a valid weapons trading license and was using a friend’s.

Tens of thousands of Ethiopians rallied against Islamic State in the capital Addis Ababa’s Meskel Square, after the executions of 30 Ethiopian Christians by evil militants in Libya.  Some demonstrators broke off from the government-sponsored rally and demanded the government do more to avenge the 30.  Clashes with police broke out, about a hundred people were arrested.

South African police arrested eleven more men for violence against foreigners in Johannesburg.  At least eight people have died, after the Zulu king allegedly said foreigners should leave SA – he later denied the comments.

Pope Francis will visit Cuba on his way to the United States in September.  The Vatican played a huge role in bringing the two countries together to end more than 50 years of Cold War that everyone in the world (except some crabby old Cuban exiles in Miami) knew wasn’t working.

A drone helicopter that landed on the rooftop heliport of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s official offices tested positive for slight amounts of radioactive cesium.  It carried a camera and a small bottle with a sticker of the radiation symbol.  Police don’t know who did it or when, but there is now talk of banning drone helicopters around sensitive sites in Japan.  Prime Minister Abe wasn’t in Tokyo at the time, he was at a summit in Indonesia.  BTW, the Russian propaganda network RT was flying drones in Japan to gather video, including over Fukushima.  Just sayin’.

In Stupid America, Lucas Hinch of Colorado was working at his legal Marijuana shop when his computer started acting up.  After a fierce battle, he finally decided to put the Dell tower out of its misery with his new gun, shooting the tower several times.  No, Lucas, that’s not what is meant by “troubleshooting”.  Cops confiscated his gun and he’ll likely face a hefty fine.

Cute Giraffe-necked Antelope baby is cute.

Don the Dog took his owner’s tractor for a spin in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, but it turned out the pooch isn’t a very good driver.  Farmer Tom Hamilton had stepped out of the machine for a moment on Wednesday morning, but left it running.  Don leaned on the controls and the tractor went careening through the field, crashing through the fence onto the M74 highway, before crashing into the central reservation.  Don and Tom were not hurt, but I think there’s a bad dog in Scotland who’s getting points on his license.
