The United Nations has completely exonerated the whistleblower who exposed the sexual abuse of children in the Central African Republic by UN peacekeeping troops from France.  Anders Kompass passed confidential documents to the authorities in Paris because of the UN’s failure to stop the exploitation.  It comes a few weeks after an independent panel report set up by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon also ruled that Kompass did nothing wrong.  The abuse occurred in a refugee camp near Bangui airport, where the French were supposed to be protecting displaced civilians  between December 2013 and June 2014.  Mr. Kompass says he is considering leaving the UN high commission on refugees:  "No one has said anything to me, no one has apologized to me.  I think many of us expected they might do so particularly after everything that has happened.  But nothing has been said, and I probably just have to accept that, although it is very disappointing."

An avalanche killed five members of the French Foreign Legion on a training exercise in the Alps near the resort of Valfrejus.  Another six are injured.  French authorities didn't reveal the nationalities of the troops, who are recruited from all over the world.  This is the second avalanche tragedy in France this month:  Two French students and a Ukrainian tourist were killed last Wednesday after their teacher took them off-piste near Grenoble - the teacher is seriously injured and charged with involuntary manslaughter.

German authorities will put a 95-year old ex-nazi on trial on 29 February for crimes at the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp.  Hubert Zafke was a medical orderly at the camp from August 15, 1944 to September 14, 1944 at the height of the holocaust.  He's specifically implicated as an accessory in the deaths of 3,681 from 14 train, including the one that brought teenage Anne Frank to the camp.  Ms. Frank was later transported to Bergen-Belsen where she died.  Although German media reports that Zafke is suffering from dementia, authorities say he was perfectly aware of what was happening at Auschwitz in the 1940s.

Cologne, Germany police arrested a 26-year-old Algerian asylum seeker, the first arrest in connection with a string of sexual assaults during the city's New Year's Eve celebrations.  Two other Algerians were busted for alleged robberies.  The NYE debacle sparked a debate about Germany's ability or even its desire to integrate the million migrants who came into the country in 2015 to escape war, hunger, and oppression in Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.

Mexican authorities are trying to get actress Kate del Castillo to come into the consulate in Los Angeles to be questioned over her links with drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.  In October, Del Castillo set up a meeting between El Chapo - who was a fugitive at the time - and Hollywood actor Sean Penn.  Guzman was arrested on 8 January, six months after he escaped Mexico's highest-security prison via a tunnel dug from the outside to his shower stall.

Baby Orangutan was found severely malnourished on Borneo; in fact, rescuers initially thought he was already dead and mummified.  They nursed him back to health and placed him with other orphaned Orangs to learn how to do Orangutan stuff.

The UK House of Commons debated whether to ban the vile American billionaire racist and Republican party presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering the country, based on similar bans placed on Muslim and Christian hate preachers.  Parliament has a rule to consider for debate any petition with more than 100,000 signatures, and the Trump ban petition got more than 574,000.  Signatories and several MPs want Trump banned for his branding of Mexicans as thieves and rapists, his call to halt all Muslim immigration, and repeating thoroughly debunked claims that areas of London and the UK have become "no-go" zones because of Islamic radicalization.  Tories (naturally) defended the orange clown, some moderate Labour MPs defended his right to be a caustic fool, others didn't want to make him a fascist "martyr".  I like what Labour MP Jack Dwomey said.

Director Spike Lee and actress Jada Pinkett Smith say they will boycott next month's Academy Awards in Hollywood because of the academy's failure to nominate any Black actors or actresses for Oscars this year or last.  Among those overlooked were the NWA biopic "Straight Outta Compton" for best picture and Pinkett Smith's husband Will Smith for best actor in NFL film "Concussion". "Begging for acknowledgement, or even asking, diminishes dignity and diminishes power," Pinkett Smith said on social media, "And we are a dignified people and we are powerful."  Spike Lee was much more direct, saying he "cannot support" the "lily white" awards show.  Both announced their boycott on the US holiday honoring the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King.
