European Union ministers have finally approved plans to militarize the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean and establish a Naval task for to deal with human traffickers in Libya. The force, to be headquartered in Rome, would: gather intelligence on smugglers; stop and inspect suspected smuggling vessels; destroy those boats once they’re secure. The UK is spearheading the drive to get the UN Security Council to pass a resolution establishing a legal basis for the plan.
Iraq’s Shiite militias are massing near the city of Ramadi to counter-attack Islamic State forces, which captured it over the weekend. It’s believed IS militants killed hundreds of people in the process, moving in after Sunni Iraqi army regulars abandoned their positions. It is imperative for Iraq to recapture Ramadi, which is the home of the military command center for all of Anbar province.
A mudslide in northwestern Colombia killed at least 48 people. Recovery efforts are still underway in water-logged Salgar, on the banks of the Rio Liboriana in Antioquia province, where rain loosened the hillsides. “The earth slid into the course of the La Liboriana ravine, then the dammed water caused an avalanche which destroyed everything in its path,” said regional police commander Jose Angel Mendoza. At least 27 people are injured. Army units and sniffer dogs are employed in the search and rescue operation.
Texas police arrested about 170 suspects in the bikie gun battle that erupted on Sunday afternoon in a mall in the middle of the town of Waco. Cops say some and possibly all of them could be charged with capital murder under Texas law, because of the number of victims – nine dead and 18 injured.
