The Kurdish YPG militia said Turkish tanks shelled its positions in a village on the outskirts of a border town held by Islamic State instead of hitting the terrorists.  This happened in Jarablus in northern Syria, near Kobani.  The YPG has been the most effective force in fighting Islamic State, but is tied to a banned Kurdish political party in Turkey.  Meanwhile, the US confirms it is working with Turkey to create a “safety zone” in northern Syria free of Islamic State forces, one that would be backed by protected by US and Turkish air cover. 

US President Barack Obama praised Ethiopia as an “outstanding partner” in the Western fight against radical Islamic militants.  Mr. Obama credited Ethiopian forces for weakening Al Shabaab in Somalia.  But the US president cautioned that press freedoms and democracy in Ethiopia were still “significant” topics of discussions.

The bomber who struck the Jazeera Palace Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia was a German of Somali origin.  An Ethiopian security source tells the BBC that it’s been determined that the man was from Bonn, but the investigation is still in the early phase.  At least 15 people died in the attack on the Jazeera, which houses foreign diplomatic missions.

Indian authorities say ten people died in Punjab, when gunmen laid siege to a train station and then the local police station.  The dead include four police officers and three attackers.  Security forces tried to capture one of the attackers alive to determine who they were.  Local residents believe the militants crossed into the Gurdaspur district from Indian-administered Kashmir.

TV star Maggie Kirkpatrick is denying child sex allegations after being charged in Melbourne’s Magistrates Court.  The 74-year old is best known for playing a guard in “The Prisoner”, and also appeared in “Hey Dad!”, “Blue Heelers”, “All Saints”, and “Home and Away”.  “I need to go to court to have this ridiculous situation quashed,” Kirkpatrick told a radio interviewer, “Allegations have been leveled at me, yes.  Are they true?  Absolutely not.”

Lord John Sewell on Monday said he would request a leave of absence from the UK House of Lords as police investigate a tabloid report that he used drugs while cavorting with prostitutes.  Scotland Yard and the Parliament corruption watchdog are investigating Sewell after the Murdoch tabloid The Sun published photos of him wearing a red bra and leather jacket, snorting cocaine off of a women’s breasts.  PM David Cameron says Sewell needs to stand down altogether.

PM Cameron, btw, is visiting Southeast Asia – including Indonesia President Joko Widodo in Jakarta – to discuss trade issues, IS, et cetera.

Spanish firefighters continue to battle a stubborn wildfire that has blackened more than 1,200 of bush in Catalonia, and forced the evacuations of at least 800 people.  Several building and cars have been destroyed.

If opponents hoped that Argentina President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner’s political troubles would extend to the next generation of Leftist leadership, they’re going to be disappointed.  Daniel Scioli tops the list of candidates in polls before primary elections in two weeks – and he holds 11.4-point lead over the main opposition candidate, Maurico Macri.  The main election is in October.
