Some people in Vanuatu are drinking harmful saltwater, after Tropical Cyclone Pam wiped out their freshwater supply.  That’s counterproductive, because the human body then uses more water to wash out the excess salt in the system, leading to dehydration and possible death.  Meanwhile, the ABC released drone footage of the destruction around the capital Port Vila, revealing a grey and brown landscape that used to be lush and green.

A horrific scene in Vietnam, as a five year old boy got tangled up in the ropes of a giant kite, got carried up 20 meters in the air, and then plunged to his death.  The incident was captured on mobile video, view at your own risk – it is not a good thing, this link is a blurred and faded version from a UK tabloid..  The kite was a giant replica of the Vietnamese Flag, but handlers were already having trouble controlling it in gusty conditions.

The retirement of a promising 24-year old Linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers American Football team is causing a stir.  Chris Borland says he’s already suffered two concussions and he does not want to risk any problems later in life.  The NFL has been rocked by a string of suicides by mentally impaired former players who suffered brain damage as a result of game.  Borland is the fifth and most prominent player to retire for this reason in the off-season that began after the Superbowl.  These guys could have made millions over the next three to five years – they chose long, healthy lives instead.

Ukrainian boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko says Russian President Vladimir Putin is risking “World War III” with his actions in Ukraine, especially annexing the Crimean Peninsula.  “After what happened during the Second World War, you just cannot go ahead and flout international laws.  What is happening at the moment could set off a third World War,” he said.  The current WBA-IBF-WBO heavyweight champion is preparing to defend his titles at Madison Square Garden in New York next month; his older brother Vitali left boxing and is the mayor of Kiev.

An Egyptian prosecutor filed charges against a police officer in the death of an activist at a peaceful demonstration in January.  31-year old Shaima al-Sabbagh’s death was caught on video.  She was carrying flowers to Tahrir Square to mark the fourth anniversary of the bygone “Arab Spring”, when a cop shot her with birdshot.  Even after hundreds were killed in demonstrations since the military ousted former president Mohammed Morsi, the death of Shaima was one too many for Egyptian society, and even President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi demanded justice.

The UK Judicial Conduct Investigations Office sacked three judges for viewing pornographic material via their official IT accounts.  The content wasn’t illegal, but it was clearly inappropriate and “wholly unacceptable conduct for a judicial office holder”.  A fourth judge resigned before the inquiry got to his case.

It’s two and a half years in prison each for a New Zealander and two Myanmar men after they were found guilty of “insulting religion” with a bar advertisement.  Philip Blackwood, who managed the VGastro Bar in Yangon, and the two others made up a poster depicting the head of a Buddha wearing headphones surrounded by psychedelic colors.  Blackwood plans to appeal the sentence.
