Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before the US Congress to warn the US against striking a nuclear deal with and working with a country “deeply rooted in militant Islam”, saying Tehran “will always be an enemy of America”.  Several members of President Barack Obama’s Democratic Party boycotted the speech because Netanyahu was invited by the Republican majority against all diplomatic protocols.  The speech drew a fascinating mix of protesters, from Orthodox Jews who’ve grown weary of Netanyahu trying to speak for the entire diaspora, to peace activists sick of the constant violence in the Middle East.

Iran says the US insistence that that it freeze sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years is “unacceptable”.  However, Iran and the US say that talks aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions will continue in Montreux, Switzerland.  The United States and some of its allies suspect Iran of using its civil nuclear program as a cover to develop a nuclear weapons capability.  Iran denies it.

The father of the terrorist known as “Jihadi John” is condemning his son as a “dog” and is praying for his death.  Numerous reports identify Londoner Mohammed Emazi as “Jihadi John”, the black-masked terrorist seen in Islamic State (IS) videos beheading Western hostages.  Emwazi’s family in Kuwait apparently tried to talk him out of joining the vile militant group, and Jassem Emwazi reportedly told his son, “F*** you.  I hope you die before you arrive in Syria.”  The younger Emwazi’s actions have devastated the family to the point of keeping his father from work due to sheer embarrassment.

Twitter is not bowing to threats from Islamic State, and has quietly closed more than 2,000 accounts associated with both IS and al Qaeda.  IS has threatened one of the social media site’s founders with death because of it, but Twitter is going ahead anyway and insists is not the result of pressure from the US government.

Chilean rescuers evacuated more than 3,000 people out from harm’s way beneath the erupting Villarrica Volcano, 670 kilometers south of Santiago.  It’s a popular place to climb around this time of year, and authorities are worried that mudslides caused by melting snow could endanger nearby communities.  Visually, this is Villarrica’s most spectacular eruption since 1985.  “It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen,” said 29-year-old Australian tourist Travis Armstrong.  “Lightning was striking down at the volcano from the ash cloud that formed from the eruption.”

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta personally helped troops set fire to 15 tons of confiscated elephant tusks, the bloody harvest of poachers.  “We want future generations of Kenyans, Africans and the entire world to experience the majesty and beauty of these magnificent beasts,” Kenyatta said at Nairobi National Park, “Poachers and their enablers will not have the last word.”  The group Save The Elephants says 100,000 elephants were killed in Africa between 2010 and 2012.

Outrage in India, where the rapists who gruesomely killed a promising young medical student in Delhi in 2012 apparently didn’t learn their lesson.  Mukesh Singh is on death row for the crime, telling a reporter that it was the 23-year old victim’s fault for being out at night and for resisting her attackers.  Singh and three of the other men on death row are appealing their sentences.

Maharashtra state passed India’s toughest bans on the sale and even the possession of beef, with penalties including five years in prison and hefty fines.  This comes after the conservative Hindu nationalist BJP came into power.  Critics say farmers with beef cattle could now be stuck with the financial hardship of feeding and caring for the animals well into old age.  India’s most-populous city Mumbai is in Maharashtra state, so the ban affects a lot of people.  But others won’t notice it at all, because it doesn’t cover “Carabeef” – meat from Water Buffalos, which many restaurants have been serving all along anyway.
