Pope Francis on Friday demanded the leaders of the Philippines fight endemic corruption to end the “scandalous social inequalities” in the deeply Roman Catholic country, where tens of millions live in poverty. The Pope is one a five-day visit to the Philippines. President Benigno Aquino has waged an anti-corruption campaign that netted four high ranking public officials. But critics say the campaign has focused only on Aquino’s political rivals.
An Aussie nurse treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone has been airlifted to a facility in the United Kingdom after what has been described as a “low risk” incident. She has not been diagnosed with Ebola. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop thanks the UK for its help and support in the matter. More than 8,370 people have died in the West African Ebola outbreak, with the overwhelming majority of cases in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.
Federal police raided the Sydney home of self-styled radical Islamic preacher Junaide Thorne. The 25-year old flagged every law enforcement official’s attention with recent comments that the Paris terrorist attacks were somehow justified. He faces two charges for allegedly using a false name to travel between Sydney and his native Perth. Some lawmakers were actually trying to help Thorne in 2013, when he and his brother ran into unspecific terrorism trouble in Saudi Arabia. But when Junaide got back to Oz, he hung up an Islamic State flag and started making a name for himself though hate preaching.
The hero of the kosher grocery store siege in Paris last week is being rewarded with French Citizenship. Lassana Bathily, a Muslim born in Mali, is credited with saving several hostages from the self-declared Islamist gunman by hiding them in the store’s freezer, and shutting it off so they didn’t get too cold. Bathily then joined the rest of the hostages in the main part of the store, never letting on that the others were safely hidden. Bathily’s naturalization ceremony is on Tuesday.
Two young women are back home in Italy after being held hostage by Islamist militants in Syria. 21-year old Vanessa Marzullo and 20-year old Greta Ramelli were aid workers when they were abducted by Al Nusra Front near Aleppo. Italy is not confirming rumors of paying a US$15 Million ramsom to secure their release.
New travel and trade rules between the US and Cuba take effect on Friday. That effectively ends the embargo on goodies like Cuban Cigars and Rum, which can now be brought to the US in small quantities. And you just know that US car collectors are going to be showing up in empty cargo ships with fists full of cash. Americans can now travel to Cuba for eleven specific (and one incredibly nebulous) reasons without having to get the permission of the US State Department.
