Prime Minister Tony Abbott is reportedly planning a trip to India to sign a new trade deal on uranium exports.  India is believed to have some 100 nuclear weapons in its arsenal, and is not a signatory to the international Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.  However, Indian officials have convinced Australia that the radioactive rocks will not end up in nuclear weapons.  Abbott’s visit to India is expected early next month.

Two New Zealanders were among the 18 foreigners and five Indonesians rescued so far from the sinking of a tourist boat off Komodo Island.  Two foreigners remain missing.  The boat went down in a storm on Saturday.

At least three people are dead after torrential rains caused massive flooding in northern Kyoto prefecture in western Japan.  More than 300 millimeters fell on Fukuchiyama City in Kyoto prefecture in just 24 hours, inundating the city with waist-deep flooding, which left slippery gunk all over the place when the water receded.  Authorities issued landslide warnings in those mountainous areas forming the spine of Japan on either side of the former capital.

British police opened a homicide investigation in the death of a man found in a cargo container at the Tilbury Docks near Essex.  35 migrants were also in the container, including 13 children, and they’re now identified as Sikhs from Afghanistan.  The survivors were found to be suffering from the intense heat and dehydration and were treated at hospital.  Some have already been released and will be further questioned by authorities.

Ukrainian Army troops have retaken parts of Luhansk City from Russian-backed separatists.  But even as they took control of government buildings and police stations, the separatists shot down a Ukrainian fighter plane over the Luhansk region after it launched an attack on rebels.  The pilot ejected and officials say he made it to a secure place.

A Nigerian woman who died in Dubai had shown signs “that may be consistent with Ebola,” according to the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi.  The woman was en route to India for cancer treatment when her condition suddenly took a turn for the worse.  The woman’s husband and five medics who treated her are in isolation, but so far are reportedly to be “all well with no symptoms”.

More than 100,000 people paid their last respects to Brazilian politician and presidential candidate Eduardo Campos, who died in a plane crash last week near Sao Paulo.  The church was packed during the service and the rest lined the streets of Recife as cortege passed.  Later this week, Brazil’s Socialist Party is expected to formally appoint popular former Environment Minister Marina Silva as a replacement candidate, which could siphon some votes from the incumbent Dilma Rousseff.
