A clear violation of the Geneva Convention by Russian-backed rebel in Ukraine – Iran claims to shoot down an Israeli drone – Why is anyone allowing the word “Bacon” to upset the public order? – And a lot more in your CareerSpot World News Briefs:

Russian-backed rebels in eastern Ukraine mocked the country’s Independence Day holiday by parading captured government troops down the main square in Donetsk – filthy and bound men forced to march as a crowd of rabble spat and threw garbage.  Human Rights Watch slammed the provocation, saying it was a "humiliating and degrading treatment" of prisoners and was therefore in breach of the Geneva Convention.

China has executed eight people convicted of terrorism, including three alleged “masterminds” of the attack in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square last October, when a vehicle crashed through security barriers and plowed into a crowd killing five people.  The other five had been found guilty of crimes including murder of government officials, setting up a terrorist organization and the illegal manufacturing of explosives.  China has cracking down hard on Uighur Muslim separatists in the northwest who’ve staged a series of deadly bombing and knife attacks for the past several months.

World’s worst driver runs over a kid in China, the kid gets up and walks it off because he was between the tyres.  Seems impossible that the driver didn’t see something.

Iran says it is studying an alleged Israeli stealth drone aircraft that Elite Revolutionary Guard troops claim to have shot down as it was flying near the nuclear site at Natanz.  Israel is not commenting on the claim.  But Israel is very interested to see if Tehran is building a nuclear weapon at the uranium processing facility, while Iran insists its nuclear program is for power generation and medical research only.

Members of a prison gang beheaded three rival inmates during a prison riot in southern Brazil.  Inmates of the prison in the city of Cascavel have control of at least one building and are demanding better food and medical care in the prison.  Local media showed images at least 30 rebellious inmates shouting from the roof while they beat men held with ropes around their necks, or whose hands were tied behind them.

Hip hop impresario Marion “Suge” Knight is recovering in Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Hospital after being shot several times in a melee at a club on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood.  It happened at a VMA Awards party hosted by Chris Brown, the singer best known for beating up his ex-girlfriend Rihanna.  Suge was also shot during another VMA party in 2005.

Bacon Crisis In New England

The town of Winooski City, Vermont in America’s northeast has taken down a mock traffic sign that read “Yield For Bacon”.  The town trades advertising space on civic sign polls for some gardening and beautification around the polls.  A restaurant decided to advertise its bacon, and until now the story has been about privatization gone hilariously amok.  But that’s not why the sign is now gone.  A member of the local Islamic center saw it and complained that it is offensive to Muslims, I guess because Muslims don’t eat pork.

Now, America is supposed to have freedom of speech, and freedom of religion, or none at all if someone chooses.  And the government isn’t supposed to get involved (although it frequently does).  But the restaurant proactively removed the sign and apologized if anyone was offended by its advertising of bacon.  Which makes no sense because anyone who was offended wasn’t going to go to the restaurant and eat bacon in the first place.

I’m thinking of going to Winooski City and selling Turkey Bacon, just because.
