A man who stowed away in the undercarriage of a British Airways flight from Johannesburg to London is in critical condition, somehow surviving the 12,875 kilometer journey in the freezing high altitude where the air is too thin to breathe.  An hour after he was discovered, authorities found a dead man on a rooftop of a West London office building, and the plane did pass over the area on its way to Heathrow.  It’s not the first case of young men trying to hitch rides in wheel wells to escape the crushing poverty and oppression in the developing world.  In 2012, a young man crashed to the sidewalk in West London after falling from the wheel well of a flight from Angola.  And in 2001, a Pakistani man fell from a plane into the car park of a home improvement store.

The alleged gunman in the murders of nine people at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina appeared in court via video link.  21-year old Dylann Roof answered a couple of procedural questions from the judge, and showed absolutely no emotion at all as relatives addressed him and said they forgive him.  Witnesses said Roof told the victims he was killing them because they were black, and he believed that somehow black people were taking over the world.  Associates have come forward with stories of Roof’s racism in the days before the massacre.

Republican presidential candidates are distinguishing themselves by their despicable reactions to shooting, all seeming to try to deny the attacker’s flagrant racism.  Republican front-runner Jeb Bush – son of George H.W. and brother of George W., both former presidents – claimed no one could no the shooter’s motivations.  This is even though witnesses identified Roof’s racism early on in the tragedy.  Former Texas governor Rick Perry referred to the young white man’s actions as a drug-induced “accident”.  Former Senator and conservative Catholic Rick Santorum insisted the murders were an attack on Christianity, even though it Roof drove past scores of Christian churches over more than a hundred kilometers to reach the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston – a church with a two-century history of promoting black civil rights in racist America.

Aussie golfer Jason Day will try to compete in the final rounds of the US Open this weekend after collapsing on the ninth hole of the second round at Chambers Bay. It took him more than a few tries to get back up and Jason needed to use a golf club as a crutch before being sent off to the doctor.  “Jason was diagnosed to have suffered from Benign Positional Vertigo,” said Day’s agent Bud Martin.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says if the EU and Athens can’t reach a deal on Greece’s debt before Monday, an emergency meeting of EU leaders won’t accomplish much.  On Friday, the European Central Bank approved more emergency help for the banks, after a 1.6 Billion Euro run on deposits.  Russia says it will consider helping  Greece with a loan, if asked.

Russia is vowing to retaliate after France and Belgium seized some of Moscow’s bank accounts and real estate over legal claims from former Yukos shareholders.  Yukos is the former Russian oil company that went belly up and was taken over by the Kremlin.  Shareholders are trying to get their US$50 Billion investment returned.  Legal applications have also been filed to seize Russian state assets in the UK and US.  The Kremlin foreign ministry called in Belgium’s ambassador. Complaining that the asset seizure was “an openly hostile act” that “crudely violates the recognized norms of international law”.

At least ten people are dead after armed men attacked a beer distribution center on the outskirts of the northern Mexico city of Monterrey.  Several of the victims were stripped naked and left on the ground of the business, which distributes Corona beer in the area.  All ten are believed to be employees.  Authorities suspect an organized crime cartel was involved.

The president of Toyota Motors has apologized after one of his top executives was arrested for illegally importing banned painkillers into the country.  Akio Toyoda says he and his company should have helped US national Julie Hamp get accustomed to Japan.  Police arrested Hamp after a box marked “necklaces” came through customs filled instead with 57 tablets of oxycodone.  Akio-san described Hamp as “a dear colleague whom I trust” and added, “We believe it will become clear that Ms. Hamp did not intend to break the law.”

US Customs Agents crushed a ton of “blood ivory” right in the middle of New York City’s famed Times Square – a photo op aimed at sending the message that the illegal ivory trade will not be tolerated.  Most of the elaborately carved elephant tusks came from a single antiques dealer in Philadelphia who has already been sentenced to a couple of years in prison.  Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said the Obama administration “will stop the poachers in their tracks, stop the profits and work with our international partners to protect our global natural heritage.”

Do you ever get the feeling that the world is heading into a really, really bad place?  Maybe it is:  A study by three of America’s top universities says “without any significant doubt” that the world has moved into the sixth great extinction phase – something not seen in 65-million years.  And it’s likely that humans would be one of the species wiped out.  Researchers at Stanford, Princeton, and Berkeley point out that vertebrate species were disappearing at a rate 114 times faster than normal.  The findings echo those in a report published by Duke University last year.
