Hurricane Patricia is barreling towards Mexico's Pacific Coast, and forecasters are warning that it might be the most powerful storm ever - not in Mexico, not on the Pacific, but anywhere at any time.  They're even comparing it to Typhoon Haiyan, which killed 6,000 people in the Philippines in 2013.  Landfall is expected by Friday evening (local time) near the tourist hotspot of Puerto Vallarta and the heavily populated cities of Manzanillo and Colima.  Most tourists have evacuated, some haven't.  If Patricia maintains its current strength, Mexico can expect sustained winds of 200 miles an hour, storm surges as high as 12 meters, drenching rain, potentially lethal flash flooding, and landslides.

A tour bus and a big rig truck hauling timber collided head-on in France, killing 43 people.  The bus was filled with pensioners on a day trip to the Gironde wine region, east of Bordeaux.  Both vehicles then caught fire.  Locals say the crash site is a notoriously dangerous bend on the road.  It's France's deadliest crash in three decades.

Slovenia is asking the European Union for police officers and extra kit to deal with the thousands of migrants entering from Croatia.  The European Commission says it is prepared to send support staff, while Slovenian officials are mulling over a border fence with Croatia.  They're probably concerned after a Slovenian police helicopter captured incredible night-vision footage this week showing a hundreds of refugees and migrants arriving by train in a Croatian border town, appearing as glowing ghosts in the infrared video.  The Croatian police then march the column to the border and stand aside as the migrants run across.

Swedish police confirm the punk who put on a black mask and nazi-style helmet to kill a student and teacher at a school was racially and politically motivated.  Police shot and killed the attacker, identified as 21-year old Anton Lundin PetterssonMourners took part in candle-lit observances for the victims.  Sweden has also seen a record number of arson attacks on asylum centers, leading to concerns that the cowardly right-wing is trying to use violence and terror to influence the nation's generous policy toward asylum-seekers.

At least 37 people were killed and 100 inured in two suicide bombings in Nigeria; one during morning prayers in Maiduguri in Borno state, the other in Yola in Adamawa state. Boko Haram in suspected.

In southern Pakistan, a suicide bomber attacked an Ashura Day procession of Shiite Muslims in Jacobabad; 22 people were killed.

South African President Jacob Zuma has cancelled plans to increase university tuition and fees after more than a week of raucous protests, the largest demonstrations to hit the country since the end of apartheid in 1994.  The government initially proposed increasing student costs by ten to twelve percent, and then tried to compromise at six percent.  But the sit-ins and protests only got bigger and cops were responding in some cases with stun grenades and water cannons.  Mr. Zuma isn't necessarily being congratulated for acquiescing to the #FeesMustFall movement - some believe he should have given up on raising fees much earlier.

Snow leopards are already in danger of extinction, but man-made global warming is making it worse for the elusive Asian big cats.  Snow Leopards are usually found at elevations of 3,000 to 4,500 meters.  But conservation charity WWF says warmer temperatures creeping up the hills of the eastern Himalayas and in Mongolia are shrinking the Snow Leopard's habitat (.pdf link), because the plants and trees that host the cat's natural prey can't survive the heat.  In addition, human encroachment means the leopards are turning to livestock to feed upon, leading to humans killing the cats to protect their farms.

Somehow, I don't think that Vin Diesel is going to give up his classic Hemi Charger for this.
